The Skaapsteker (Psammophylax rhombeatus) is an oviparous species native to the grasslands, fynbos, and karoo scrublands of southern Africa. Females deposit clutches of eight to thirty eggs in sheltered locations beneath flat stones, rotting logs, or within disused termite mounds. Incubation under captive conditions typically lasts between fifty-five and seventy days at temperatures ranging from 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Hatchlings use a small, keratinous egg tooth on the premaxilla to slice through the parchment-like eggshell, a process known as pipping. Keepers should resist the temptation to assist with emergence, as premature manipulation risks tearing delicate blood vessels still connected to the yolk sac membranes.
Newly emerged Skaapsteker hatchlings are slender, fast-moving neonates measuring approximately six to eight inches in total length. Their dorsal patterning — a series of dark rhombic blotches running along the spine, bordered by lighter lateral stripes — is already well-defined at hatching and closely mirrors the adult coloration, though the contrast between markings tends to be sharper in neonates. Hatchlings are immediately mobile and will attempt to flee rather than strike when disturbed, a behavioral characteristic that distinguishes this species from many pythonid and boid neonates that tend to coil defensively.
The incubation container should be left undisturbed until all viable eggs have hatched, which may span a window of twelve to thirty-six hours from the first pip. Once all hatchlings have fully emerged and are moving independently, they can be transferred to individual holding containers using a soft paintbrush or paper cup to minimize direct hand contact. Unhatched eggs should remain undisturbed for an additional forty-eight hours, as late pippers are not uncommon in this species. Eggs that show no signs of pipping after this extended window are unlikely to be viable and can be carefully opened for inspection to determine fertility status.
Sanitation during the first hours is essential. Remove shell fragments, non-viable eggs, and any residual albumin or fluid promptly to prevent bacterial and fungal proliferation. The hatching environment should be maintained at 80 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity around 70 to 75 percent. Avoid subjecting newly emerged neonates to sudden temperature changes or excessive handling, as both stressors can trigger regurgitation of residual yolk material and compromise the hatchling's energy reserves during this critical transitional period.
