During this period, the snake undergoes a dramatic physical transformation, growing from approximately ten to fourteen inches at the end of the neonatal stage to somewhere between twenty and thirty inches by the time it reaches full adolescence. Growth is most rapid during the first year and gradually decelerates as the animal approaches its adult proportions.
Body proportions shift noticeably during the juvenile phase. The head, which appears disproportionately large relative to the body in neonates, gradually comes into proportion as the trunk and tail thicken. The dorsal rhombic pattern that characterizes this species becomes more refined, with the dark blotches developing crisper edges and the lateral striping gaining definition. Some individual variation in pattern intensity is normal, with specimens from drier karoo habitats tending toward lighter, more muted coloration compared to those from the moister grassland regions of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Shed frequency is a useful proxy for growth rate during the juvenile period. A healthy, well-fed juvenile Skaapsteker will shed approximately every four to six weeks, with each successive shed revealing a slightly larger, more robustly proportioned animal. Shed intervals that extend beyond eight weeks in an otherwise healthy juvenile may indicate insufficient caloric intake, suboptimal temperatures, or early parasitic burden. Conversely, extremely frequent shedding — every two to three weeks — combined with rapid growth may suggest overfeeding, which carries its own metabolic risks and should be moderated.
Keepers should continue weighing juveniles regularly, transitioning from weekly to biweekly measurements as the growth rate stabilizes. A digital scale accurate to one gram is sufficient for juveniles over fifteen inches. Plotting weight against length on a simple spreadsheet provides a clear visual representation of the growth trajectory and makes it easy to identify any concerning deviations. Healthy juveniles should show a steady upward trend in both weight and length, with brief plateaus around shed events that resolve promptly once ecdysis is complete.
