Adult Skaapstekers (Psammophylax rhombeatus) reach their full body length between two and three years of age, with most individuals measuring between twenty-four and forty-two inches from snout to tail tip. Sexual dimorphism in this species is subtle but present: females tend to be slightly longer and more heavily bodied than males, particularly through the mid-body region, while males typically possess proportionally longer tails relative to their total body length. These differences become apparent only in mature specimens and are difficult to distinguish without direct comparison between known-sex adults.
The adult coloration pattern is well established by this stage and will remain largely stable for the remainder of the animal's life. The dorsal surface displays the characteristic series of dark brown to olive-black rhombic blotches arranged along the vertebral line, bordered laterally by cream to pale yellow stripes. The ventral surface is typically uniform cream or pale yellow, sometimes with scattered dark speckling toward the lateral edges. Geographic variation in coloration is well documented, with populations from the arid western regions of South Africa exhibiting paler, more washed-out patterns compared to the bold, high-contrast markings seen in specimens from the humid eastern grasslands.
Body condition in a healthy adult Skaapsteker should be lean and muscular, reflecting the species' active, pursuit-oriented hunting ecology. The dorsal cross-section should be gently rounded without prominent vertebral ridging, and the ventral surface should be flat to slightly convex. Unlike heavy-bodied ambush predators such as puff adders or gaboon vipers, Skaapstekers should never appear thick or rotund. An adult that develops visible fat deposits along the body or a pronounced rounded belly outside of a gravid female is overweight and at increased risk for hepatic lipidosis and other obesity-related pathologies.
The opisthoglyphous dentition that characterizes this genus is fully developed in adults, with the enlarged rear maxillary teeth reaching their maximum size. These grooved fangs deliver a mild venom that is primarily effective against small vertebrate prey and poses minimal risk to healthy adult humans. However, prolonged chewing bites — which are more common during feeding errors than during defensive strikes — can produce localized swelling, pain, and occasionally mild systemic effects such as headache or nausea in sensitive individuals. Keepers should be aware of this venom capacity and exercise appropriate caution during handling and feeding.
