A freshly weaned Giant Angora kit requires a diet formulated to support both its large-breed frame development and the metabolic demands of producing one of the densest wool coats in the domestic rabbit world. Alfalfa-based pellets with a protein content of 16 to 18 percent and a fiber content of at least 13 percent form the dietary foundation during this period.
Unlimited alfalfa hay should be available alongside pellets for the first three to four months after weaning. Alfalfa provides the elevated calcium and protein levels that a rapidly growing large-breed rabbit requires for proper bone density and muscle development. As the juvenile approaches four months of age, begin a gradual transition from alfalfa to timothy or orchard grass hay by mixing the two together in increasing ratios over the course of two to three weeks. An abrupt switch risks gastrointestinal upset, and the Giant Angora's sensitive digestive system responds poorly to sudden dietary changes.
Fresh greens can be introduced cautiously during the juvenile period, starting with a single variety offered in small quantities and waiting 48 hours to observe digestive response before adding another. Cilantro, parsley, romaine lettuce, and dandelion greens are well-tolerated starting options. Avoid high-oxalate greens such as spinach and high-sugar fruits, both of which can disrupt cecal fermentation in a young rabbit. Fresh water should be available at all times from both a bottle and a crock, as juvenile Giant Angoras are still learning preferences and reliable hydration is non-negotiable for wool production and digestive health.
Monitor body condition regularly during this growth phase. A healthy juvenile Giant Angora should feel solid and well-muscled when palpated through its developing coat, with ribs detectable under gentle pressure but not prominently visible. Excessive weight gain during the juvenile period can stress developing joints in a breed already prone to skeletal load from its large frame. Conversely, an underweight juvenile that feels bony or fails to gain steadily may have an underlying health issue or may be losing competition for food if housed with siblings.
