Uterine adenocarcinoma is the most common cancer affecting female rabbits and represents one of the most compelling medical reasons to spay pet rabbits. This malignant tumor arises from the glandular lining of the uterus and occurs at alarmingly high rates in unspayed female rabbits, particularly those over three to four years of age. Studies have demonstrated that up to sixty to eighty percent of unspayed female rabbits will develop uterine adenocarcinoma by six years of age, making this condition virtually inevitable for intact does allowed to reach middle age.
The development of uterine adenocarcinoma follows a hormone-dependent pathway, with prolonged exposure to reproductive hormones driving abnormal cell growth in the uterine lining. Unlike many cancers where causation is multifactorial and unclear, the relationship between intact reproductive status and uterine adenocarcinoma in rabbits is well-established and direct. The tumor typically begins as localized growths within the uterine wall but has significant potential to spread to other organs, particularly the lungs, where metastasis dramatically worsens prognosis. The impact of uterine adenocarcinoma on rabbit health can be devastating, particularly when diagnosis occurs at advanced stages. Early disease may cause subtle symptoms or none at all, while advanced cancer leads to reproductive tract bleeding, anemia, weight loss, and systemic decline. Metastasis to the lungs causes progressive respiratory compromise. The discomfort and illness associated with uterine cancer commonly trigger secondary gastrointestinal stasis, which adds life-threatening complexity to an already serious condition. Quality of life deteriorates progressively without treatment, and advanced metastatic disease is ultimately fatal.
Treatment through complete ovariohysterectomy (spaying) offers excellent outcomes when performed before metastasis occurs, with surgical cure rates approaching one hundred percent for localized disease. However, rabbits instinctively hide signs of illness, and early symptoms may go unnoticed until the disease has progressed substantially. This underscores the critical importance of preventive spaying before tumors develop. Any surgical intervention in rabbits requires a rabbit-savvy veterinarian experienced in rabbit anesthesia and surgical techniques, as rabbits have unique physiological considerations that differ significantly from cats and dogs.
