Size does not appear to significantly influence risk, as both small and large rabbits develop uterine cancer. The universal recommendation for spaying all female pet rabbits applies regardless of breed background.

Screening recommendations emphasize preventive spaying as the only reliable protection against uterine adenocarcinoma. All female rabbits should ideally be spayed between four and six months of age before sexual maturity and long before tumor development becomes likely. For rabbits not yet spayed, regular veterinary examinations including careful abdominal palpation should occur at least annually, increasing to twice yearly after age three. Other uterine tumors including leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma may occur in the same rabbit. Ovarian cysts or tumors sometimes accompany uterine disease. Endometrial venous aneurysm can cause significant hemorrhage mimicking bleeding from cancer. Bladder disease including stones, sludge, or infection causes blood in urine that may be confused with uterine bleeding. Kidney disease can cause bloody urine or weight loss. Other abdominal tumors may cause masses or weight loss. Accurate diagnosis through physical examination, imaging, and ultimately histopathology ensures appropriate treatment and accurate prognosis.

Potential complications from uterine adenocarcinoma include both local progression and distant spread. Locally, tumors can invade through the uterine wall into surrounding structures or rupture causing hemorrhage into the abdomen. Chronic blood loss causes progressive anemia with weakness, pallor, and decreased exercise tolerance. Metastasis most commonly affects the lungs, causing progressive respiratory compromise, but can also involve liver, kidneys, and other organs. Secondary gastrointestinal stasis develops when pain, illness, or reduced appetite causes gut motility to slow, which can become life-threatening within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Hepatic lipidosis can occur if the rabbit stops eating, as mobilized fat accumulates in the liver. Prevention through early spaying completely eliminates the risk of these complications.
