Responsible Giant Angora breeding begins with the careful selection of breeding stock that exemplifies the breed standard and possesses sound health and temperament. The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes the Giant Angora only in the ruby-eyed white variety, so color selection is predetermined, but the qualities that distinguish a superior specimen from an average one lie in body type, wool density, fiber character, and overall structural soundness. A breeding buck or doe should weigh at least nine and a half pounds, with a commercial-type body that is broad, deep, and well-muscled. The head should be oval and slightly narrower in does, broader and more blockish in bucks.
Wool quality is the defining criterion for Giant Angora breeding selection. Evaluate the three fiber types individually. The underwool should be dense, fine, and evenly crimped, providing the voluminous base that gives the fleece its loft. Awn fluff should be present in sufficient quantity to add body to the coat, with a gentle wave that distinguishes it from the straight awn hair. The awn hair, or guard coat, should be strong but not so coarse that it diminishes the overall softness of the fleece. A balanced ratio among the three types produces a coat that is both visually impressive and commercially valuable as spinning fiber. Examine the wool coverage on the face, ears, and feet, as the breed standard calls for heavy furnishings in these areas.
Beyond physical conformation, temperament must factor heavily into breeding decisions. The Giant Angora is a breed that requires extensive handling throughout its life for grooming and wool harvesting, and rabbits that are aggressive, excessively nervous, or resistant to handling should not be propagated. Select individuals that demonstrate the breed's characteristic calm, docile nature and that cooperate during grooming sessions without excessive struggling. Temperament is heritable, and breeding calm parents significantly increases the likelihood of producing calm offspring.
Review the health history of both prospective parents before pairing. Rabbits with a personal or family history of dental malocclusion, sore hocks, GI stasis, or chronic skin conditions should be excluded from breeding programs. Request pedigrees going back at least three generations if available, looking for linebreeding coefficients that indicate the degree of genetic diversity in the line. While some linebreeding is common and even deliberate in rabbit breeding programs, excessive inbreeding concentrates detrimental recessive alleles and can produce offspring with reduced vitality, smaller litter sizes, and compromised immune function.
