This allows her skeletal system, particularly the pelvis, to reach sufficient development to support a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery of the characteristically large Percheron foal.

Stallions intended for breeding should be evaluated for conformation, temperament, and genetic soundness. A breeding soundness examination performed by an equine reproductive veterinarian assesses semen quality, libido, and reproductive tract health. The stallion's pedigree should be reviewed for hereditary conditions and lineage compatibility with the intended mare. Familiarize yourself with the three stages of labor. The first stage involves restlessness, sweating, and mild colic-like signs as the uterus begins contracting. This stage can last from 30 minutes to several hours. The second stage, active delivery, begins when the amniotic sac appears at the vulva and should be completed within 30 minutes. Any deviation from normal progression during second-stage labor, particularly if the foal is not presented in the normal diving position with both front feet and the nose appearing first, constitutes a veterinary emergency.

Monitoring systems such as foaling cameras and wearable foaling alarms can provide early notification that labor is beginning. Because mares often foal during the late-night and early-morning hours, these systems allow you to rest while remaining alert to the onset of delivery. However, no monitoring system replaces the value of experienced observation, and having a knowledgeable attendant present during foaling is strongly recommended for draft breeds.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days following foaling require attentive monitoring of both the mare and foal. The mare should pass the placenta within three hours of delivery. Retain it for veterinary inspection to confirm it was expelled completely, as retained placental tissue can cause life-threatening uterine infection in mares. If the placenta has not been passed within three hours, contact your veterinarian promptly.

The mare's udder should be checked regularly for adequate milk production and any signs of mastitis, including heat, swelling, pain, or abnormal milk appearance. Most Percheron mares are excellent mothers and nurse their foals attentively, but first-time mothers may need gentle guidance in accepting the foal's nursing attempts. The mare's own nutritional needs increase substantially during lactation. She is now producing several gallons of milk daily and requires significantly more calories, protein, calcium, and phosphorus than during late pregnancy. A high-quality lactation feed, ample forage, and unlimited access to clean water support milk production and help the mare maintain her body condition through the demanding early weeks of nursing.

Monitor the mare for signs of postpartum complications, including fever, depression, loss of appetite, abnormal vaginal discharge, or reluctance to move. Colic in the days following foaling can indicate uterine problems, retained placental fragments, or gastrointestinal disturbances. The mare's first postpartum estrous cycle, known as the foal heat, typically occurs 7 to 14 days after delivery. If rebreeding on the foal heat is being considered, the mare's reproductive tract should be evaluated by a veterinarian to confirm adequate uterine recovery.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible breeding of Percherons requires a commitment that extends far beyond the act of producing a foal. The global Percheron population, while not critically endangered, is smaller than many light horse breeds, and each breeding decision has a measurable impact on the breed's genetic health and future. Breeders carry a responsibility to prioritize soundness, temperament, and breed type over novelty, marketability, or personal convenience.

Before breeding, honestly assess whether the resulting foal will have a secure future. The market for draft horses fluctuates, and a foal born without a clear purpose or prospective home may face an uncertain path. Responsible breeders have a plan for every foal they produce, whether it will remain in their program, be sold to a carefully screened buyer, or be placed in a situation where its needs will be met throughout its life. Breeding without a plan for the offspring's future is a disservice to both the foal and the breed.

Genetic testing and health screening are increasingly accessible and should be incorporated into breeding decisions. While the Percheron breed is relatively free of the genetic diseases that plague some other breeds, awareness of conditions such as equine polysaccharide storage myopathy, which affects some draft breeds, is important. Selecting breeding stock that has been tested and found clear or appropriately managed for known conditions helps protect future generations.
