Breeding an Otterhound is a decision that carries extraordinary responsibility, particularly given the breed's status as one of the most endangered dog breeds in the world. With a global population estimated at only a few hundred individuals, every breeding decision has an outsized impact on the breed's genetic future. Prospective breeders should approach reproduction not as a casual endeavor but as a deliberate contribution to the preservation of a breed that faces a genuine risk of extinction.

Before any breeding takes place, both the sire and the dam should undergo comprehensive health screening. At minimum, this should include hip and elbow evaluations through a recognized orthopedic registry, cardiac examination by a veterinary cardiologist, and a complete blood panel. The Otterhound is also known to be affected by a bleeding disorder called Glanzmann thrombasthenia, and both prospective parents should be tested for this condition. Breeding two carriers can produce affected puppies that suffer from severe, potentially fatal bleeding episodes.

Physical maturity is a prerequisite for breeding, and for a large breed like the Otterhound, this means waiting until at least two years of age for both males and females. Females should not be bred on their first heat cycle, as their bodies are not yet fully developed to support a healthy pregnancy and lactation. Males, similarly, benefit from reaching full physical and behavioral maturity before being used at stud.

Temperament evaluation is an often-overlooked component of breeding readiness. The Otterhound's friendly, even-tempered nature is a defining breed characteristic, and both parents should demonstrate sound temperament in a variety of situations. Pregnancy & Gestation

Canine gestation in the Otterhound lasts approximately sixty-three days from ovulation, though the apparent length can vary depending on when breeding occurred relative to the actual ovulation date. Pregnancy confirmation can be performed by your veterinarian through ultrasound at approximately twenty-five to thirty days post-breeding, which can also provide an estimate of litter size, though accuracy improves later in gestation. Radiographs taken after day fifty-five provide a more precise puppy count by visualizing fetal skulls and spines.

Nutritional demands increase as pregnancy progresses. During the first four weeks, the dam can remain on her regular adult food. Beginning around week five, gradually transition her to a high-quality puppy food or a performance formula that provides the additional calories and nutrients needed to support fetal development. By the final weeks of pregnancy, she may need to consume up to fifty percent more calories than her normal maintenance requirement. Feed smaller, more frequent meals as the growing puppies occupy increasing abdominal space and compress the stomach.

Exercise should continue throughout pregnancy but should be adjusted in intensity and duration as the dam's body changes. Moderate walks and gentle swimming are appropriate throughout most of gestation. Avoid rough play, jumping, and any activity that risks abdominal trauma. As the due date approaches, the dam may naturally decrease her activity level, preferring shorter outings and more rest.

Monitor the dam closely during the final two weeks of pregnancy. Nesting behavior, loss of appetite, a drop in rectal temperature below ninety-nine degrees Fahrenheit, and restlessness are all signs that whelping is approaching. Have your veterinarian's emergency contact information readily available, and ensure that your whelping supplies are assembled and accessible well before the anticipated due date.

Whelping Preparation

Preparation for whelping should begin well in advance of the expected due date. Set up the whelping box in a quiet, private area of the home where the dam feels comfortable and where you can monitor the process without disruption. The box should be large enough for the Otterhound to lie down fully extended with room for the puppies, with sides tall enough to contain the newborns but low enough for the dam to step over easily.

Assemble a whelping kit that includes clean towels, hemostats for clamping umbilical cords, sterile scissors, iodine solution for cord stumps, a bulb syringe for clearing airways, a digital scale, a notebook and pen for recording birth times and weights, colored ribbons or non-toxic markers for identifying puppies, and a canine milk replacer and bottle-feeding supplies in case supplemental feeding is needed.

Establish a relationship with your veterinarian regarding after-hours emergencies before whelping begins. Know the location and contact information for the nearest emergency veterinary clinic in case complications arise outside of regular business hours. Discuss in advance the circumstances under which you should call for guidance versus proceed to the clinic immediately, so that you can act decisively rather than hesitating during a stressful situation.

Familiarize yourself with the stages of normal labor and the warning signs of complications. Stage one labor involves restlessness, panting, and nesting behavior and can last six to twelve hours. Stage two is active delivery, during which puppies are born at intervals of fifteen minutes to two hours. Prolonged straining without producing a puppy, more than two hours between deliveries, a green or black discharge before the first puppy arrives, or signs of extreme distress in the dam are all reasons to contact your veterinarian immediately.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days following whelping require attentive monitoring of both the dam and her puppies. Ensure that the dam passes all placentas, as a retained placenta can lead to serious infection. Count placentas during the whelping process and note the total. A dark, reddish-green vaginal discharge called lochia is normal for several weeks after delivery, but a foul-smelling discharge, fever, lethargy, or loss of appetite in the dam may indicate metritis or another postpartum infection that requires veterinary treatment.

The dam's nutritional demands during lactation are the highest of her lifetime, often exceeding three times her normal caloric intake when supporting a large litter. Provide a high-quality, nutrient-dense food in multiple daily meals and ensure constant access to fresh water. Monitor her body condition closely, as the physical demands of nursing a large Otterhound litter can cause rapid weight loss if caloric intake is insufficient.

Monitor each puppy's weight daily during the first two weeks to confirm adequate nursing and growth. Puppies that fail to gain weight or that lose weight need immediate attention, which may include supplemental bottle feeding, treatment for underlying illness, or rotation to more productive nipples. A puppy that is consistently pushed aside by stronger littermates may need supervised nursing sessions to ensure fair access.

Allow the dam to establish her maternal routine with minimal interference. Most Otterhound dams are attentive and capable mothers, but first-time mothers may need gentle guidance in positioning puppies for nursing or stimulating elimination. Keep the whelping area clean and warm, change bedding frequently, and limit visitors during the first week to reduce stress on the dam and minimize disease exposure to the vulnerable neonates.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The ethical dimensions of breeding Otterhounds extend beyond the individual litter to encompass the future of the entire breed. With such a small global population, every breeding decision influences the gene pool in a meaningful way. Responsible breeders work collaboratively with breed clubs and genetic advisors to select pairings that maintain genetic diversity while improving health and temperament. Inbreeding coefficients should be calculated for every proposed mating, and pairings that result in excessively high coefficients should be reconsidered even if both individuals are exceptional specimens.

A commitment to health testing is non-negotiable for ethical breeders. All recommended health screenings should be completed and the results made publicly available through breed health databases. Transparency about health test results, even unfavorable ones, contributes to the collective knowledge that benefits the breed as a whole. Breeders who conceal health issues or breed dogs with known disqualifying conditions undermine the trust and cooperative effort that preservation breeding requires.

Every puppy produced should have a secure, committed home waiting for it before breeding takes place. Responsible breeders screen prospective puppy buyers carefully, provide comprehensive information about the breed's needs and characteristics, and maintain a willingness to take back any dog they have produced at any point in its life if the owner can no longer keep it. Financial considerations should be addressed honestly. Ethical breeding is rarely profitable and often involves significant expense for health testing, veterinary care during pregnancy and whelping, puppy rearing, and the inevitable emergencies that arise.
