Postpartum Care

Immediately after whelping is complete, assess both the dam and the litter. Count the puppies and placentas, as a retained placenta can cause serious infection. The dam should be offered water and a small amount of easily digestible food, as she has expended considerable energy during delivery. Allow her to rest with her litter in the clean, warm whelping box with fresh bedding.

During the first week postpartum, the dam will have a vaginal discharge called lochia that is initially dark and gradually lightens over two to three weeks. This discharge is normal, but any sudden increase in volume, a foul odor, or a change to bright red may indicate hemorrhage or infection and requires veterinary assessment. The dam's nutritional demands are at their highest during peak lactation, which occurs around three to four weeks postpartum. She may need to consume two to three times her normal caloric intake to maintain her body condition while producing sufficient milk for the litter. Feed a high-quality, calorie-dense diet in multiple meals throughout the day, and ensure continuous access to fresh water. Weight loss during lactation is common but should be gradual and moderate. Rapid or excessive weight loss indicates that nutritional support needs to be increased.

Monitor each puppy's weight daily during the first two weeks to ensure consistent growth. Puppies that fail to gain weight, are repeatedly pushed away from nipples, or appear lethargic may need supplemental feeding and veterinary evaluation. Watch the dam's interactions with the litter for signs of attentive maternal behavior. While most Bedlington dams are devoted mothers, first-time dams occasionally need guidance and reassurance during the early postpartum period.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Bedlington Terriers carries a significant ethical responsibility that extends well beyond the technical aspects of reproduction. The breed's relatively small population makes genetic stewardship particularly important. Every breeding decision either broadens or narrows the genetic pool, and breeders have an obligation to prioritize genetic diversity alongside breed type and health. Linebreeding and inbreeding coefficients should be carefully calculated and kept at moderate levels to minimize the accumulation of deleterious recessive traits.

Transparency in health testing is a hallmark of ethical breeding.
