Both the sire and the dam should be fully mature, in excellent overall health, and free of disqualifying hereditary conditions. While a Bedlington female may experience her first heat cycle as early as six to eight months of age, breeding should not occur until the dog has reached full physical and mental maturity, generally no earlier than two years of age. Males should likewise be at least two years old before being used at stud, allowing time for health screenings to be completed and adult temperament to stabilize.
Health testing is particularly critical in the Bedlington Terrier due to the breed's well-documented susceptibility to copper toxicosis. DNA testing for the COMMD1 gene deletion is considered essential for any dog being considered for breeding. Carriers and affected dogs require careful breeding decisions to avoid producing affected offspring. In addition to copper toxicosis testing, both breeding partners should be screened for progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, and cardiac health through examinations by the appropriate veterinary specialists.
Temperament is a non-negotiable consideration in any breeding program. The Bedlington Terrier should exhibit the breed's characteristic blend of gentleness, loyalty, and spirited confidence without excessive fearfulness or unprovoked aggression. Dogs with significant behavioral issues should not be bred regardless of their physical attributes, as temperament has a strong heritable component and directly affects the suitability of offspring as companions.
Before committing to a litter, prospective breeders should have a realistic plan for puppy placement. The Bedlington Terrier is not a high-demand breed, and finding suitable homes for every puppy requires networking, screening, and a willingness to take back any dog at any point in its life if the placement does not work out. Breeding without a placement strategy contributes to overpopulation and undermines the breed's welfare.
