Continue feeding high-quality kitten food during the entire nursing period, as the caloric and nutritional demands of milk production are immense. The queen's behavior toward her kittens should be attentive and nurturing. She should be spending the majority of her time with the litter during the first week, leaving only briefly for food, water, and the litter box. A queen that abandons her kittens, refuses to nurse, or shows aggression toward them requires immediate intervention, which may include hand-rearing the kittens and veterinary assessment of the queen for underlying medical issues.
