Postpartum Care

The immediate postpartum period requires attentive monitoring of both the queen and her kittens. Following delivery, the queen should be given the opportunity to rest, nurse, and bond with her litter without unnecessary interference. However, the caregiver should observe from a respectful distance to confirm that each kitten is nursing successfully, that the queen is attentive and responsive, and that no signs of distress are present in either the mother or the kittens.

The queen's physical recovery should be supported with high-quality, nutrient-dense food offered frequently in small portions. Lactation places enormous caloric demands on the mother, and a nursing Sphynx queen may require two to three times her normal caloric intake during peak milk production. Monitor the queen for signs of postpartum complications including excessive bleeding, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or reluctance to nurse. Mastitis, an infection of the mammary glands, can occur and is characterized by swollen, hot, or painful mammary tissue. Any of these signs require immediate veterinary attention. The queen's vulvar discharge should gradually decrease over the first two to three weeks and transition from reddish-brown to clear before resolving entirely.

The nesting area should be kept scrupulously clean, with bedding changed at least once daily. Hairless kittens in constant skin contact with soiled bedding are at heightened risk for irritation and infection. Weigh each kitten daily at a consistent time and record the results. Consistent weight gain of approximately 10 to 15 grams per day indicates adequate nutrition. A kitten that fails to gain or loses weight should be evaluated promptly, and supplemental feeding initiated if necessary.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible Sphynx breeding extends far beyond producing kittens with the desired physical appearance.
