Testicular tumors represent the second most common type of cancer in intact male dogs, affecting approximately seven percent of unneutered males over their lifetime. These tumors arise from the various cell types found within the testicles and are classified into three main types: Sertoli cell tumors, seminomas, and interstitial cell tumors. While many testicular tumors behave in a benign manner and are successfully treated with castration alone, some demonstrate malignant potential with the ability to spread to other organs. The condition primarily affects older intact males, typically those over seven years of age, with cryptorchid dogs facing dramatically elevated risk.
Testicular tumors develop when normal testicular cells undergo neoplastic transformation, leading to uncontrolled growth and tumor formation. The three main tumor types originate from different cell populations within the testicle. Sertoli cell tumors arise from the supportive cells of the seminiferous tubules and frequently produce estrogen causing feminization. Seminomas develop from the germ cells that normally produce sperm. Interstitial cell tumors, also called Leydig cell tumors, originate from the testosterone-producing cells between the seminiferous tubules. Multiple tumor types can occur simultaneously within the same testicle or in both testicles.
The significance of testicular tumors extends beyond the local testicular mass to include systemic effects from hormone production and potential for metastatic spread. Hormone-secreting tumors, particularly Sertoli cell tumors, can cause feminization syndrome characterized by mammary development, hair loss, and behavioral changes. Bone marrow suppression from excess estrogen represents a serious complication that can become life-threatening. While most testicular tumors remain localized and are cured by castration, approximately ten to fifteen percent of Sertoli cell tumors and seminomas metastasize to lymph nodes and distant organs.
Early detection and treatment of testicular tumors through surgical castration offers excellent outcomes for the majority of affected dogs. Regular veterinary examination of intact males enables detection of testicular changes before tumors become advanced or cause systemic effects. The prognosis for dogs with localized testicular tumors is generally excellent, with castration providing definitive treatment. However, dogs with metastatic disease or severe complications from hormone production face more guarded outcomes. Prevention through elective castration eliminates the risk entirely, while prompt evaluation and treatment of detected tumors provides the best outcomes for dogs that develop this common cancer.
