Cryptorchidism is a developmental condition in male dogs characterized by the failure of one or both testicles to descend into the scrotum. Under normal development, the testicles form within the abdomen during fetal life and migrate downward through the inguinal canal into the scrotum during the first weeks to months after birth. In dogs with cryptorchidism, this normal descent is incomplete, leaving the affected testicle retained either within the abdomen or within the inguinal canal. The condition is one of the most common congenital abnormalities affecting male dogs and has significant implications for the dog's health and breeding potential.
Cryptorchidism is classified based on the location of the retained testicle and whether one or both testicles are affected. When a single testicle is retained while the other descends normally, the condition is called unilateral cryptorchidism, which is the most common presentation. Bilateral cryptorchidism, where both testicles are retained, is less common but does occur. The retained testicle may be located within the abdominal cavity (abdominal cryptorchidism) or within the inguinal canal or subcutaneous tissue near the external inguinal ring (inguinal cryptorchidism). The location affects the surgical approach required for treatment.
The significance of cryptorchidism extends beyond the anatomical abnormality itself. Retained testicles are subject to elevated temperatures compared to normally descended testicles in the scrotum, and this temperature difference has important consequences. Spermatogenesis (sperm production) is impaired in retained testicles, affecting fertility, though dogs with unilateral cryptorchidism may still be fertile through the normally descended testicle. More concerning is the substantially increased risk of testicular neoplasia (cancer) in retained testicles, which develops at a rate many times higher than in normally positioned testicles. Additionally, retained testicles may be at increased risk for testicular torsion.
Due to the hereditary nature of cryptorchidism and the associated health risks, veterinary and breed organization recommendations uniformly advise against breeding dogs with this condition. Surgical removal of the retained testicle, along with the normally descended testicle (complete castration), is the recommended treatment. This prevents the development of testicular cancer, eliminates the risk of passing the trait to offspring, and addresses any concerns related to the retained testicle. Early identification of cryptorchidism during puppy examinations allows for appropriate counseling of owners and timely treatment.
