Strongyloides infection, also known as strongyloidiasis, is a parasitic disease caused by the threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis in dogs. These tiny, hair-like nematodes are unique among intestinal parasites due to their ability to complete their entire life cycle within a single host through a process called autoinfection, potentially leading to persistent, self-perpetuating infections that can become increasingly severe over time. While Strongyloides infection is less commonly diagnosed than roundworms or hookworms in dogs, it remains an important parasitic disease, particularly in kennels, breeding facilities, and regions with warm, humid climates where environmental conditions favor parasite survival and transmission.
The life cycle of Strongyloides stercoralis is remarkably complex and distinguishes this parasite from other common canine intestinal worms. The adult parasitic females live embedded in the mucosa of the small intestine, where they produce eggs by parthenogenesis without requiring fertilization by males. These eggs hatch rapidly, and the resulting larvae pass out in the feces. Under favorable environmental conditions, larvae can develop into infective forms capable of penetrating the skin or being ingested to infect new hosts. Alternatively, larvae can complete development to free-living adult males and females in the soil, producing additional generations that eventually yield infective larvae. Most significantly, larvae can also develop to the infective stage while still within the host's intestine, allowing them to reinfect the same animal and perpetuate the infection indefinitely.
The impact of Strongyloides infection on canine health varies considerably depending on the intensity of infection and the immune status of the host. In healthy adult dogs with functioning immune systems, infections are often subclinical or cause only mild, intermittent digestive symptoms. However, in puppies, immunocompromised dogs, or dogs experiencing autoinfection cycles, the disease can become severe and even life-threatening. Heavy infections cause significant damage to the intestinal lining, resulting in malabsorption, protein loss, and diarrhea. The larval migration phase, during which infective larvae travel through the lungs before reaching the intestine, can cause respiratory symptoms including coughing and, in severe cases, pneumonia.
Treatment of Strongyloides infection requires carefully selected anthelmintic medications, as not all dewormers commonly used for other intestinal parasites are equally effective against this parasite. The potential for autoinfection means that treatment must be thorough to prevent persistence of the infection, and repeated courses or prolonged treatment may be necessary. Environmental decontamination is particularly important given the parasite's ability to develop in soil and the potential for continuous reexposure in contaminated environments. The zoonotic potential of Strongyloides stercoralis, with documented transmission between dogs and humans, adds a public health dimension to the importance of diagnosis and treatment. Veterinary guidance is essential for appropriate diagnosis and management of this sometimes challenging parasitic infection.
