Red bugs, more commonly known as chiggers or harvest mites, are the larval stage of trombiculid mites belonging to the family Trombiculidae. The species most frequently implicated in canine infestations include Trombicula autumnalis in Europe and Eutrombicula alfreddugesi in North America. Despite their colloquial name, red bugs are not true insects but rather arachnids, placing them in the same class as ticks and spiders. Only the larval stage is parasitic, feeding on the skin cells of mammals, birds, and reptiles before dropping off to continue their development into free-living nymphs and adults.
The larvae are extremely small, typically measuring only 0.2 to 0.4 millimeters in length, making them barely visible to the naked eye. They are bright orange to red in color, which accounts for the common name red bugs. When clustered together on a dog's skin, they may appear as tiny orange or reddish dots concentrated in areas where the skin is thin or where the dog's body contacts the ground. Their minute size means that infestations are often identified by the symptoms they produce rather than by direct observation of the mites themselves.
Red bugs are found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions, with seasonal activity patterns that vary by geography. In temperate climates, infestations are most common during late summer and autumn, earning them the alternate name harvest mites. In warmer regions, they may be active year-round. The larvae hatch from eggs laid in soil and vegetation and ascend to the tips of grass blades and low-growing plants, where they wait in clusters for a passing host animal.
The condition caused by red bug infestation is known as trombiculiasis. While it is generally not a serious health threat, the intense itching and skin irritation it produces can cause significant discomfort and lead to secondary complications such as bacterial skin infections from self-trauma. Understanding the biology and behavior of these parasites is key to effective prevention and treatment.
