The prostate gland is an accessory sex gland located at the base of the bladder in male dogs, surrounding the urethra as it exits the bladder. This gland produces seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm during ejaculation. Due to its location and function, the prostate is susceptible to bacterial infection, particularly in intact males where hormonal influences promote glandular enlargement and create conditions favorable for bacterial colonization. When infection becomes established and the body cannot eliminate the bacteria, abscess formation may occur.

The enlarged, infected prostate can obstruct urinary flow and compress the colon, causing difficulty with both urination and defecation. Dogs with prostatic abscesses often experience severe pain, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite, and the condition can rapidly progress to life-threatening sepsis if not promptly addressed.
Successful treatment of prostatic abscess typically requires a combination of surgical intervention, prolonged antibiotic therapy, and castration to address the underlying hormonal factors that contribute to prostatic disease. While the condition is serious, dogs that receive prompt and appropriate treatment can achieve good outcomes. Early recognition of symptoms and immediate veterinary care are essential for the best possible prognosis, as delayed treatment increases the risk of complications including sepsis, peritonitis, and death.
