Pasteurellosis is a bacterial infection caused by organisms in the Pasteurella genus, with Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella canis being the most commonly isolated species in dogs. These bacteria are normal inhabitants of the oral and respiratory mucosa of many healthy dogs and cats, existing as commensal organisms that typically cause no harm to their hosts. Clinical disease develops when bacteria gain access to normally sterile body sites through wounds, spread from colonized respiratory surfaces during periods of immune compromise, or are introduced into susceptible tissues. Pasteurellosis represents one of the most common bacterial infections associated with animal bites and can affect multiple organ systems depending on the route of infection.
The pathogenic mechanism of Pasteurella involves bacterial invasion of tissues where these organisms do not normally reside. When introduced through bite wounds, scratches, or other breaks in the skin, Pasteurella bacteria multiply rapidly in the warm, moist wound environment, producing enzymes and toxins that damage local tissues and promote spread. Respiratory pasteurellosis develops when bacteria from the upper respiratory tract descend to the lower airways, particularly when normal defense mechanisms are impaired by viral infection, stress, or other factors. The body's inflammatory response to Pasteurella infection contributes to clinical signs, with the balance between bacterial virulence and host defenses determining disease severity.
Clinical presentations of pasteurellosis in dogs range from localized wound infections to severe systemic disease affecting multiple organs. Wound infections following bites or penetrating injuries are most common, producing local swelling, pain, and purulent discharge. Respiratory infections manifest as pneumonia with cough, nasal discharge, and breathing difficulty. Less commonly, Pasteurella can cause osteomyelitis affecting bones, septic arthritis involving joints, meningitis, and systemic bacteremia with multi-organ involvement. The specific presentation depends on how the bacteria entered the body and the overall health status of the affected dog. Young puppies, elderly dogs, and immunocompromised individuals tend to develop more severe disease.
The zoonotic potential of Pasteurella makes this infection particularly important from a public health perspective. Humans can acquire pasteurellosis from dog bites, scratches, or close contact with respiratory secretions of infected animals. In people, pasteurellosis typically presents as a rapidly developing wound infection with intense pain, swelling, and redness, though respiratory and systemic infections also occur. This transmission risk underscores the importance of proper wound care following animal contact and appropriate treatment of infected dogs. Fortunately, pasteurellosis generally responds well to common antibiotics when diagnosed promptly, with most dogs achieving complete recovery with appropriate veterinary care.
