This bacterium is one of several pathogens that can cause or contribute to the kennel cough complex, which may also involve viruses such as canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus type 2, canine respiratory coronavirus, and canine influenza virus. Bordetella infection is extremely common in dogs, particularly those that interact with other dogs in settings like kennels, shelters, dog parks, grooming salons, and training classes.
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a gram-negative, aerobic bacterium that has evolved specific mechanisms to colonize and damage the respiratory epithelium. When a susceptible dog inhales the bacteria, they attach to the cilia lining the airways using specialized adhesion factors. The bacteria then produce toxins that paralyze and eventually destroy the cilia, impairing the respiratory tract's natural defense mechanisms. This ciliary damage allows the bacteria to persist in the airways and makes the dog more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections that can worsen the illness.
The impact of Bordetella infection on affected dogs ranges from a mild, self-limiting cough to more serious pneumonia in severe cases. Most healthy adult dogs experience a harsh, dry cough that may sound like honking and can persist for several weeks but does not significantly impair their overall health. However, puppies, elderly dogs, and those with compromised immune systems or underlying respiratory conditions may develop more severe disease.
