The virus primarily affects the upper respiratory tract, including the nose, throat, trachea, and bronchi, causing inflammation and irritation that produces the characteristic harsh, dry cough associated with the condition. Most infected dogs develop symptoms within two to fourteen days of exposure and recover within one to three weeks with appropriate supportive care. The illness is generally self-limiting in healthy adult dogs, though it can be more severe in puppies, elderly dogs, and those with compromised immune systems or pre-existing respiratory conditions.
Canine parainfluenza virus spreads through respiratory secretions, becoming aerosolized when infected dogs cough, sneeze, or bark. The virus can also spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces and objects. The highly contagious nature of the virus, combined with its ability to spread before symptoms become apparent, makes it difficult to control in environments where dogs congregate. Vaccination against canine parainfluenza virus is widely available and commonly included in core vaccination protocols for dogs. The vaccine is typically combined with vaccines for distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus in the commonly administered DHPP combination vaccine, and is also available as part of intranasal Bordetella vaccines. While vaccination may not completely prevent infection, it significantly reduces the severity and duration of illness in vaccinated dogs that do become infected.
