Lupoid onychodystrophy, also known as symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy or SLO, is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that specifically targets the nail beds of dogs, causing progressive damage to claws across multiple paws. This condition represents one of the most common causes of abnormal nail growth and loss in dogs, distinguished from other nail disorders by its characteristic symmetric involvement of nails on all four feet. The term lupoid refers to the histopathological features observed in affected tissue, which resemble findings in lupus erythematosus, though lupoid onychodystrophy is considered a distinct disease process that does not represent true systemic lupus.
The disease process in lupoid onychodystrophy involves immune-mediated attack on the nail matrix, the tissue responsible for generating new nail growth. Inflammatory cells infiltrate the nail bed and progressively destroy the structures necessary for normal claw development. This immune attack results in nails that become soft, misshapen, and painful before eventually separating from the nail bed and sloughing off. The condition typically affects multiple nails simultaneously and tends to progress to involve all or nearly all claws over time, though the rate of progression varies between individual dogs.
Certain breeds demonstrate significantly increased susceptibility to lupoid onychodystrophy, suggesting genetic factors influence disease development. German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Gordon Setters, and Bearded Collies are among the breeds most commonly affected, though the condition can occur in dogs of any breed. The typical age of onset is young to middle-aged adults, usually between two and eight years of age. Both male and female dogs are affected, with some studies suggesting slightly higher occurrence in males. The condition causes significant discomfort and can dramatically impact affected dogs' mobility and quality of life.
While lupoid onychodystrophy is not curable, the condition can often be successfully managed with long-term therapy aimed at modulating the immune response. Treatment typically involves combination therapy using essential fatty acid supplementation, immunomodulatory medications, and supportive care for affected nails. Many dogs respond well to treatment and achieve regrowth of functional nails, though lifelong management is usually required to prevent relapse.
