Lymphosarcoma, more commonly referred to as lymphoma, is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in dogs, accounting for approximately 7 to 24 percent of all canine neoplasms and roughly 83 percent of hematopoietic malignancies. This cancer originates from lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in the immune system. When these cells undergo malignant transformation, they proliferate uncontrollably and can infiltrate virtually any organ in the body.
The lymphatic system, which is the primary target of this disease, is a vast network of tissues and organs that includes lymph nodes, the spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissue associated with the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Under normal circumstances, lymphocytes circulate through this network, providing surveillance against infections and abnormal cells. In lymphosarcoma, the malignant lymphocytes accumulate in one or more of these sites, disrupting normal organ function and immune system activity.
Canine lymphosarcoma typically affects middle-aged to older dogs, with the median age at diagnosis being between 6 and 9 years. However, the disease can occur in dogs of any age, including young adults. The incidence of lymphosarcoma in the general canine population is estimated at approximately 20 to 100 cases per 100,000 dogs per year, making it a significant concern in veterinary oncology.
The disease is broadly classified based on the anatomical location of involvement, the immunophenotype of the malignant cells (B-cell versus T-cell), the histological grade, and the clinical stage. These classifications have important implications for treatment selection and prognosis, as different subtypes of lymphosarcoma can behave very differently in terms of aggressiveness and responsiveness to therapy.
