This cancer can arise in lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, and virtually any other organ where lymphocytes are present, making it a systemic disease requiring systemic treatment. Lymphoma accounts for approximately seven to twenty-four percent of all canine cancers and is the most common hematopoietic malignancy in dogs. While lymphoma is a serious diagnosis, it is also one of the most treatment-responsive cancers in veterinary medicine, with many dogs achieving significant remission periods through chemotherapy. The underlying mechanism of lymphoma involves malignant transformation of lymphocytes, which normally circulate through the body providing immune surveillance and response. Lymphocytes travel through the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and nodes that parallels the blood circulatory system and serves as a key component of immune defense. When lymphocytes become cancerous, they retain their tendency to circulate widely, explaining why lymphoma typically affects multiple body sites simultaneously. The malignant lymphocytes proliferate uncontrollably, accumulating in lymph nodes and organs, disrupting normal immune function, and eventually compromising organ function if left untreated. Lymphoma is classified by anatomic location and cell type, with multicentric B-cell lymphoma being the most common form in dogs.
Lymphoma significantly impacts a dog's health, though effects vary based on the specific form and extent of disease. The most common multicentric form causes progressive enlargement of lymph nodes throughout the body, which may compress adjacent structures or cause discomfort. Splenic and hepatic involvement can cause abdominal enlargement and organ dysfunction. Bone marrow infiltration leads to anemia, immune suppression, and bleeding tendencies. Alimentary lymphoma affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and malabsorption. Mediastinal lymphoma in the chest can compress the airways and heart, causing breathing difficulties. Cutaneous lymphoma affects the skin with nodules, ulcers, or widespread changes. Without treatment, lymphoma typically progresses rapidly, causing significant decline within weeks to months.
Treatment for lymphoma represents one of veterinary oncology's success stories, with chemotherapy protocols achieving remission rates of eighty to ninety percent in dogs with the common multicentric B-cell form. The standard multi-agent CHOP-based chemotherapy protocol produces median survival times of approximately twelve to fourteen months, with many dogs living longer. Single-agent protocols offer a gentler alternative with somewhat shorter remissions. While lymphoma is rarely cured, many dogs enjoy excellent quality of life during remission, often with minimal treatment side effects. Prognosis varies by lymphoma type, with B-cell lymphoma carrying better outcomes than T-cell disease. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment optimize outcomes, making owner awareness of lymphoma symptoms valuable for early detection.
