Flea allergy dermatitis, commonly abbreviated as FAD, is an allergic reaction to proteins present in flea saliva that is injected into the skin during a flea bite. It is the single most common skin disease in dogs worldwide and represents the most frequent cause of allergic dermatitis in canine patients. The condition is not caused by the physical irritation of the bite itself but rather by a hypersensitivity reaction mounted by the dog's immune system against specific allergenic compounds in the saliva of the flea Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea, which despite its name is the predominant flea species found on dogs.
The allergic response in FAD is disproportionate to the flea burden on the dog. While non-allergic dogs may tolerate substantial flea infestations with minimal clinical signs beyond occasional scratching, a dog with FAD can develop severe, widespread skin disease from the bite of a single flea. This extreme sensitivity makes the condition particularly frustrating for owners, who may not see any fleas on their pet yet observe dramatic clinical signs.
FAD typically develops in dogs between one and five years of age, though it can occur at any age. The condition tends to worsen with repeated exposure to flea bites over successive seasons, as the immune system becomes increasingly sensitized. In regions with year-round warm climates, FAD may be a continuous problem, while in temperate zones it often follows a seasonal pattern corresponding to peak flea activity in late summer and autumn.
The condition has a significant negative impact on quality of life for affected dogs and their owners. The intense itching associated with FAD can lead to self-inflicted trauma, secondary infections, sleep disruption, behavioral changes, and chronic skin damage. Effective management requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both the allergic response and the underlying flea exposure.
