Distichiasis is a common eyelid abnormality in dogs characterized by the presence of extra eyelashes, called distichia, growing from abnormal locations along the eyelid margin. These abnormal lashes emerge from the openings of the meibomian glands, which are oil-producing glands normally located along the inner eyelid margin where eyelashes should not grow. The condition can affect one or both eyes and may involve the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Distichiasis is one of the most frequently diagnosed eyelid abnormalities in dogs, with certain breeds showing strong hereditary predisposition.
The abnormal lashes in distichiasis arise from a developmental error in which hair follicles differentiate within the meibomian gland tissue rather than in their normal location at the external lid margin. These distichia emerge through the meibomian gland openings on the inner lid margin, directing them toward the eye surface rather than away from it like normal eyelashes. The number, size, and stiffness of distichia vary considerably between individuals and even between eyes in the same dog. Some distichia are fine and soft, causing minimal problems, while others are coarse and rigid, producing significant corneal irritation.
The clinical significance of distichiasis ranges from incidental finding to serious cause of ocular disease. Many dogs with distichiasis experience chronic eye irritation, excessive tearing, and corneal damage from constant contact between the abnormal lashes and the sensitive corneal surface. The repeated microtrauma from distichia rubbing against the cornea can lead to corneal ulceration, scarring, and potentially permanent vision impairment. However, some dogs with distichiasis show minimal clinical signs, particularly when the distichia are fine, soft, and few in number. This variability makes individual assessment essential for treatment planning.
Treatment of distichiasis typically requires procedures to permanently remove or destroy the abnormal hair follicles, as simple plucking results in regrowth. Veterinary ophthalmologists offer several effective treatment options, with selection based on the number and characteristics of the distichia as well as the degree of clinical signs. Early identification and appropriate management prevent chronic corneal damage and preserve comfortable vision. The hereditary nature of the condition has implications for breeding decisions, as affected dogs should not be bred to avoid passing the trait to offspring.
