Drug eruptions can cause vesicles and erosions and should be considered if recent medication exposure has occurred. Severe burns, including chemical burns, can cause skin blistering. Infectious causes including bacterial pyoderma, dermatophytosis, and viral infections may cause vesicles or erosions. Accurate differentiation requires histopathology and often immunological testing.

Complications of bullous pemphigoid primarily involve secondary problems arising from skin barrier disruption and treatment side effects. Secondary bacterial infection of erosions is common and can become serious if it leads to septicemia. Fluid and protein loss from extensive skin damage can cause dehydration and hypoproteinemia. Long-term immunosuppressive therapy predisposes to various infections and can cause iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism, diabetes mellitus, and other complications. Skin scarring may occur in areas of severe damage, leading to permanent cosmetic changes. Monitoring for these complications and implementing preventive measures is an important aspect of managing dogs with bullous pemphigoid.
