Discoid lupus erythematosus, commonly abbreviated as DLE, is an autoimmune skin disease in dogs that primarily affects the nose and occasionally other facial areas. This condition represents one of the most common autoimmune skin diseases in canine medicine and is characterized by inflammation, depigmentation, crusting, and erosion of the nasal planum. Unlike systemic lupus erythematosus, which affects multiple organ systems throughout the body, discoid lupus is limited to the skin and does not cause internal organ damage or systemic illness. The condition has historically been referred to as collie nose or nasal solar dermatitis, though these terms are less precise and may encompass other conditions as well.
The pathophysiology of discoid lupus erythematosus involves an autoimmune attack on the basal layer of the epidermis, the deepest layer of the outer skin. The immune system produces antibodies that target proteins in this region, leading to inflammation at the junction between the epidermis and dermis. Ultraviolet light exposure plays a significant role in triggering and exacerbating the condition, which explains why lesions often worsen during summer months or in dogs with significant sun exposure. The inflammatory response damages melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment, leading to the characteristic depigmentation seen in affected dogs.
Discoid lupus erythematosus primarily affects the nasal planum, which is the hairless, often black or brown, surface of the nose in dogs. Early changes include loss of the normal cobblestone texture of the nasal skin and subtle lightening of pigmentation. As the condition progresses, more obvious depigmentation develops, the surface becomes smooth and shiny, and crusting and erosions may appear. While the condition is not life-threatening, it can cause discomfort, cosmetic changes, and potential complications including secondary bacterial infections and, rarely, development of squamous cell carcinoma in chronically damaged tissue.
Veterinary care is important for dogs with suspected discoid lupus erythematosus to confirm the diagnosis and implement appropriate treatment. The condition responds well to various immunomodulatory treatments in most cases, and sun protection plays a crucial role in management. With proper treatment and sun avoidance, most dogs with DLE maintain good quality of life and experience significant improvement in their skin lesions. The chronic nature of the condition means that long-term management is typically necessary, but the overall prognosis is favorable for dogs receiving appropriate care.
