Asteroid hyalosis is an ophthalmic condition in which numerous small, spherical, white to golden-yellow deposits form within the vitreous humor of the eye. The vitreous humor is the clear, gel-like substance that fills the posterior chamber of the eye between the lens and the retina. In asteroid hyalosis, these deposits, known as asteroid bodies, are suspended throughout the vitreous and move gently with eye movements, often returning to their original positions when the eye comes to rest. The condition creates a distinctive and striking appearance on ophthalmic examination that is readily recognized by veterinary ophthalmologists.
The asteroid bodies are composed primarily of calcium hydroxyapatite complexed with various lipids, including phospholipids and fatty acids. These deposits are firmly attached to the vitreous collagen framework, which distinguishes them from the freely mobile opacities seen in other vitreous conditions such as synchysis scintillans. Each asteroid body is typically small, measuring between ten and one hundred micrometers in diameter, and their highly reflective surfaces create the characteristic sparkling or starfield appearance that gives the condition its name, derived from the resemblance to stars or asteroids suspended in space.
Asteroid hyalosis is generally considered a benign and incidental finding in veterinary ophthalmology. The condition is predominantly unilateral, affecting only one eye in the majority of cases, though bilateral involvement has been documented. It is most commonly identified in older dogs, with the prevalence increasing with advancing age. Despite the visually dramatic appearance of the asteroid bodies on examination, the condition rarely causes clinically significant visual impairment in dogs. Most affected dogs continue to navigate their environment and perform daily activities without any apparent difficulty.
The condition has been recognized in veterinary medicine for many decades and has been extensively described in the ophthalmic literature of both human and veterinary medicine. While the precise mechanisms underlying the formation of asteroid bodies remain a subject of ongoing investigation, the condition is well understood in terms of its clinical behavior, diagnostic features, and prognostic implications. Veterinary ophthalmologists encounter asteroid hyalosis regularly in clinical practice, and it is an important condition to differentiate from other vitreous pathologies that may have more significant clinical consequences.
