Tricuspid valve dysplasia is a congenital cardiac malformation in which the tricuspid valve, located between the right atrium and right ventricle of the heart, develops abnormally during fetal development. This condition results in a valve that cannot function properly, leading to inefficient blood flow through the right side of the heart. The malformed valve may be thickened, have abnormally positioned leaflets, or feature shortened or absent chordae tendineae, the supporting structures that normally anchor the valve leaflets. The underlying cause of tricuspid valve dysplasia stems from disrupted embryonic development of the heart valves and their supporting structures. During normal fetal development, the atrioventricular valves form through a complex process of tissue remodeling and differentiation. When this process is interrupted or proceeds abnormally, the resulting valve structures are malformed and incapable of normal function. The degree of dysplasia varies considerably between affected cats, ranging from mild valve abnormalities with minimal clinical impact to severe malformations that cause significant hemodynamic compromise. The impact of tricuspid valve dysplasia on affected cats depends primarily on the degree of valve dysfunction and the resulting hemodynamic consequences. A malformed tricuspid valve typically allows blood to flow backward from the right ventricle into the right atrium during ventricular contraction, a condition called tricuspid regurgitation. This backward flow reduces the efficiency of the heart in pumping blood to the lungs for oxygenation and creates volume overload on the right atrium and ventricle. Over time, the right heart chambers enlarge to accommodate the increased blood volume, eventually leading to right-sided heart failure in severely affected cats. Cats with mild dysplasia may remain asymptomatic throughout life, while those with severe valve malformation may develop signs of heart failure at a young age.
Tricuspid valve dysplasia is considered a treatable condition, though the approach and expected outcomes vary based on severity. Mild cases may require only monitoring without intervention, while moderate to severe cases benefit from medical management to control symptoms of heart failure and improve quality of life. Surgical valve repair or replacement remains challenging in cats due to their small size, but advances in veterinary cardiology continue to expand available options. Early detection through careful cardiac examination and diagnostic imaging allows for appropriate treatment planning and improved outcomes.
