Allergic rhinitis may produce chronic nasal symptoms without the structural damage characteristic of rhinosinusitis. Oronasal fistulas from dental disease or trauma create communication between oral and nasal cavities causing chronic nasal discharge.

Potential complications of chronic rhinosinusitis include extension of infection to adjacent structures and systemic effects from chronic illness. Osteomyelitis, or bone infection, may develop in severe cases where infection penetrates the nasal bones. Frontal sinusitis occurs when infection involves the frontal sinuses. In rare cases, infection may extend to the brain, causing meningitis or brain abscess with potentially fatal consequences. Chronic weight loss and malnutrition result from prolonged decreased appetite. Aspiration pneumonia may develop if cats inhale nasal discharge into their lungs. Quality of life deterioration is perhaps the most common complication, affecting cats through chronic discomfort, reduced activity, and diminished enjoyment of normal feline behaviors.
