This condition occurs when the delicate tissues of the larynx become inflamed, swollen, and irritated, leading to changes in voice, difficulty swallowing, and in severe cases, potentially life-threatening airway obstruction. Laryngitis can affect cats of any age or breed, though it most commonly develops secondary to upper respiratory infections or exposure to environmental irritants. The condition ranges from mild, self-limiting inflammation to severe disease requiring emergency intervention.
The causes of feline laryngitis are diverse and include infectious agents, irritants, trauma, and underlying systemic conditions. Upper respiratory infections caused by feline herpesvirus or calicivirus frequently extend to involve the larynx, causing concurrent laryngitis along with nasal and ocular symptoms. Inhalation of smoke, dust, chemical fumes, or other irritants can trigger laryngeal inflammation. Excessive or prolonged vocalization, particularly in stressed or anxious cats, can cause mechanical irritation. Less commonly, laryngeal tumors, foreign bodies, or trauma from intubation during anesthesia can result in laryngitis. Identifying the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment.
The impact of laryngitis on affected cats depends greatly on the severity of inflammation and the degree of laryngeal swelling. Mild cases may cause nothing more than a slightly hoarse meow or occasional cough. Moderate inflammation produces more noticeable voice changes, gagging, and difficulty swallowing. Severe laryngitis can cause significant airway narrowing leading to audible breathing difficulty, respiratory distress, and potentially fatal airway obstruction if not treated promptly. The larynx also serves as a protective valve preventing aspiration of food and water into the lungs, so laryngeal dysfunction can lead to aspiration pneumonia as a serious complication.
Laryngitis in cats is generally treatable once the underlying cause is identified and addressed. Many cases resolve with supportive care and treatment of concurrent upper respiratory infection. More severe cases require anti-inflammatory medications, rest, and sometimes hospitalization for airway monitoring and management. Cats with severe laryngeal swelling may need emergency intervention to maintain an open airway. Early recognition of laryngitis symptoms enables prompt treatment that prevents progression to more dangerous stages. Understanding this condition helps cat owners recognize when their feline companion's voice changes warrant veterinary attention.
