The condition develops during fetal development when the septum between the atria fails to close completely. In cats with ASD, this closure fails to occur properly, or an additional defect in the atrial septum persists, resulting in continued abnormal blood flow between the chambers.
The impact of atrial septal defect on a cat's health varies considerably depending on the size and location of the defect. Small defects may cause minimal hemodynamic disturbance and allow cats to live relatively normal lives with few or no symptoms. However, larger defects can lead to significant volume overload of the right side of the heart, pulmonary overcirculation, and eventually right-sided heart failure if left untreated. The abnormal blood flow pattern can also predispose affected cats to arrhythmias and other cardiac complications over time.
Early detection of atrial septal defect is crucial for optimal management and prognosis. Many cats with ASD are initially identified through the detection of a heart murmur during routine veterinary examination, often as kittens. With advances in veterinary cardiology, including echocardiography and other imaging techniques, accurate diagnosis and assessment of defect severity have become increasingly accessible. Treatment options range from conservative medical management for mild cases to surgical correction for more severe defects, and many affected cats can enjoy good quality of life with appropriate care and monitoring.
