The most important preparatory step is the management of the snake's feeding schedule relative to the planned travel date. Desert Kingsnakes should not be transported with a recent meal in their digestive tract, as the combination of physical movement, temperature fluctuation, and stress associated with travel can disrupt normal digestion and lead to regurgitation. Regurgitation is a serious physiological event for snakes that can cause esophageal inflammation, dehydration, and a prolonged recovery period during which the animal may refuse food. As a general guideline, keepers should allow a minimum of five to seven days between the snake's last meal and the date of transport, ensuring that digestion is fully complete before the animal is subjected to the disruptions of travel.
A pre-travel health assessment is advisable for any Desert Kingsnake facing a journey of significant duration or distance. Keepers should examine the animal for signs of illness, injury, or parasitic infection that could be exacerbated by the stress of transport. Respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, mucus discharge, or open-mouth breathing should be evaluated by a reptile-experienced veterinarian before travel proceeds, as the stress of transit can worsen subclinical respiratory infections into acute illness. Similarly, animals in the process of shedding, known as being in blue or in opaque, should not be transported if the journey can be postponed, as snakes in shed are already in a physiologically stressed state with impaired vision and heightened defensive sensitivity.
Hydration should be addressed before travel by ensuring that the snake has access to fresh water in the days leading up to departure. While water is not typically provided inside the travel container during short to moderate transits to avoid spillage and the associated risk of chilling, the animal should enter the travel period in a well-hydrated state.
