Transporting a Clydesdale by road requires equipment and planning that go well beyond what is needed for a light horse. Standard two-horse bumper-pull trailers are generally inadequate for a full-grown Clydesdale. The breed's height, width, and weight demand a trailer with extra-tall ceilings of at least seven and a half feet in the interior, widened stall partitions, and a floor and frame rated for the combined weight of the horses being hauled. Stock trailers and large gooseneck models designed for draft breeds or cattle are the most common choices, though some owners invest in custom-built trailers tailored to their horses' specific dimensions.
The tow vehicle must be matched to the load. A Clydesdale weighing two thousand pounds plus the weight of the trailer itself can easily exceed the towing capacity of a half-ton pickup truck. Most Clydesdale owners rely on three-quarter-ton or one-ton trucks with heavy-duty suspension, transmission coolers, and trailer brake controllers. Checking tire pressure, hitch connections, and brake function before every trip is essential, and drivers should allow for significantly longer stopping distances when hauling a heavy load.
Loading and unloading require patience and attention to safety. Clydesdales are generally calm and cooperative loaders, but their size means that any sudden movement in a confined space can have serious consequences. Non-slip ramp surfaces, adequate lighting, and a clear escape route for the handler are all important considerations. Butt bars or doors should be secured before the horse's head is tied, and the lead rope should be tied with a quick-release knot at a height that allows the horse to balance comfortably during transit.
Road trip planning should account for regular rest stops every three to four hours, during which the horse can be offered water and checked for signs of stress or injury. Travel during the cooler parts of the day is advisable in warm weather, as large-bodied horses generate considerable heat and are more susceptible to heat stress in enclosed trailers. Adequate ventilation, either through adjustable vents and windows or through open stock-trailer side panels, is critical to maintaining airflow during transit.
