The White-Eyed Conure (Psittacara leucophthalmus) is native to a vast stretch of eastern South America, ranging from Venezuela and the Guianas southward through Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and into northern Argentina. It is one of the most geographically widespread conure species on the continent, occupying an ecological range that encompasses tropical and subtropical lowland forests, gallery forests along river corridors, open woodlands, cerrado savanna margins, and even semi-urban agricultural landscapes. This adaptability to varied habitats has been a defining characteristic of the species and a key factor in its long-term population stability relative to more habitat-restricted parrots.
The species favors edge environments where forest meets open country, and it is frequently observed in areas with scattered tall trees, palm groves, and cultivated land adjacent to wooded patches. White-Eyed Conures typically forage in flocks that can range from small family groups of six to eight individuals to large aggregations of several hundred birds, particularly at favored fruiting trees or communal roosting sites. Their diet in the wild consists of a broad array of seeds, fruits, berries, flowers, and occasionally insect larvae, reflecting the generalist feeding strategy that has allowed the species to persist across such a wide range.
Communal roosting behavior is a conspicuous aspect of the White-Eyed Conure's ecology. At dusk, flocks converge on traditional roost trees, often tall palms or dense-canopied species, where dozens or even hundreds of individuals settle for the night in a cacophony of calls. These roost sites may be used for years or decades if left undisturbed, and the social dynamics at the roost play a role in pair bonding, flock cohesion, and information exchange about food sources. This gregarious nature has made the species a familiar presence in rural and peri-urban landscapes across much of its range.
The White-Eyed Conure's tolerance of disturbed and fragmented habitats sets it apart from many neotropical parrot species that have declined sharply in the face of deforestation. While the species is by no means immune to habitat loss, its willingness to exploit secondary growth, agricultural margins, and even urban parks has buffered it against the worst effects of land-use change. This ecological resilience forms the backdrop against which the species' long history of interaction with human communities has unfolded.
