More frequent changes can create chronic low-grade stress in animals that are temperamentally cautious, while less frequent changes allow the environment to become so familiar that the snake's activity level plateaus. Maintaining a small inventory of enrichment items that can be swapped in and out of the enclosure on a rotating basis is a practical strategy. Three or four sets of branches, several different hide options, an assortment of cork bark pieces in various shapes and sizes, and a collection of textural substrates give the keeper enough material to create meaningfully different enclosure layouts without needing to purchase new items each time. Items that are removed during a rotation should be cleaned, disinfected, dried thoroughly, and stored until their next turn in the enclosure.
