Housing a Diamond Python well begins with accepting that this is a three dimensional animal. Morelia spilota spilota is semi-arboreal, spending substantial time in low trees, shrubs, and rock ledges, and it uses vertical space actively rather than incidentally. Floor area alone is therefore a poor measure of an adequate enclosure. The working minimum for a healthy adult is an enclosure measuring four feet long by two feet deep by three feet tall. A six foot by two foot by four foot enclosure is a far better target and is what most experienced keepers of this subspecies eventually build or buy. Longer and taller are both improvements; deeper improves the thermal gradient by giving the keeper room to separate hot and cool zones.
Height is only useful if it is furnished. An empty four foot tall box offers a Diamond Python no more usable territory than a shallow one, because a heavy bodied snake will not hover in open air. Usable vertical space is created by horizontal branches, cork flats, and ledges arranged at multiple heights so the animal can climb, rest coiled at elevation, and select a basking position above the substrate. As a practical rule, plan for at least three distinct elevated resting positions in an adult enclosure, with the highest positioned to intersect the basking zone and the lowest close enough to the substrate that an old or gravid animal can reach it without a demanding climb.
Juveniles are housed differently. A hatchling placed directly into a six foot enclosure will often refuse food, hide persistently, and fail to establish a routine, because open space reads as exposure to a small snake with many natural predators. Start hatchlings in an enclosure of roughly twenty-four by twelve by twelve inches, densely furnished with cover and small climbing structures, and upgrade in stages as the animal grows. Two intermediate sizes between hatchling housing and the adult enclosure is a typical progression across the first three to four years, which is unhurried by the standards of faster growing pythons.
Practical logistics deserve consideration before purchase. A furnished six foot enclosure with substrate is heavy, and a stand or rack must be rated accordingly and levelled properly, particularly if enclosures are stacked. Position the enclosure away from heating and cooling vents, out of direct window sun, and clear of high traffic areas that produce constant vibration. Allow physical access to the rear and sides for cable routing and thermostat probe placement, and confirm before installation that the room itself can get cool enough in winter to support the seasonal cool-down this species requires, because that constraint often dictates which room the enclosure belongs in.
