The water container is the accessory a Diamond Python interacts with most often, and it is worth buying properly rather than repurposing. The requirements are a low centre of gravity, a wall thick enough to resist being displaced by a coiling adult, a smooth non-porous interior that can be scrubbed and disinfected, and a rim low enough that the snake can enter and exit without straining. Glazed ceramic crocks and heavy-walled food-grade plastic tubs both satisfy these criteria. Lightweight plastic dishes and shallow saucers do not, and a tipped container in an enclosure with organic substrate creates a saturated patch that breeds mold within days.
Size is a design decision rather than a default. For a species that soaks readily and comes from a wet coastal environment, a container large enough for the animal to submerge most of its body converts a drinking vessel into a functional part of the habitat. For adults this typically means a container in the range of fourteen to eighteen inches across. Fill depth of two to three inches is sufficient and keeps the volume manageable during cleaning. Some keepers reduce container size deliberately during humid periods to limit evaporation, using a smaller vessel in summer and a larger one during shed cycles.
Placement affects both hygiene and the enclosure's thermal profile. Position the water container at the cool end, away from basking lamps and heat panels, so evaporation does not drive ambient humidity upward and so the water itself remains cool and fresh. Keep it clear of the area directly below elevated perches, since waste deposited from height into a water container is a routine and unpleasant occurrence in arboreal setups. Placing the vessel on a flat tile or a section of slate rather than directly on substrate reduces contamination and makes lifting it out for cleaning cleaner.
Supporting hydration equipment is short but worth having. A dedicated scrub brush reserved for the water container, never shared with other cleaning tasks, prevents cross contamination. A large measuring jug simplifies refilling without removing the container. A hand mister with a fine nozzle covers targeted humidity boosts during shed cycles and rainfall simulation. Keepers on hard water or on unfiltered supplies often use dechlorinated or filtered water, which is not strictly necessary for a python but reduces the mineral scale that otherwise builds on ceramic and makes containers difficult to keep visibly clean.
