The dish should be large enough for the snake to submerge a portion of its body for soaking, which Cat-Eyed Snakes do periodically during the pre-shed phase and during warm periods when passive cooling through immersion helps regulate body temperature. A dish with interior dimensions of roughly four to six inches in diameter and one to two inches deep accommodates an adult Cat-Eyed Snake comfortably without occupying excessive floor space in a moderately sized enclosure.
Weight and stability are critical design factors. Cat-Eyed Snakes are active nocturnal movers that push against and climb over enclosure furnishings during their nightly foraging circuits, and a lightweight plastic dish placed on an uneven substrate will inevitably be tipped, flooding the substrate and creating the waterlogged conditions that promote bacterial growth and scale rot. Ceramic water dishes and heavy resin dishes with broad, flat bases resist tipping and are available in naturalistic finishes that complement the aesthetic of a planted terrarium. The interior surface should be smooth and easy to wipe clean, as textured or porous surfaces harbor biofilm that requires more aggressive scrubbing to remove.
Water quality matters more than many keepers realize. Municipal tap water treated with chlorine and chloramine should be dechlorinated before use, either by adding a reptile-safe water conditioner or by allowing the water to stand in an open container for twenty-four hours so that dissolved chlorine off-gasses. Chloramine, which is increasingly used by municipal water systems because it persists longer in pipes than chlorine, does not dissipate through standing and requires chemical neutralization. While the concentrations of disinfectants in treated tap water are not acutely toxic to snakes, chronic exposure through drinking and skin contact may irritate mucous membranes and contribute to low-grade digestive upset over time.
Supplemental hydration tools extend beyond the basic water dish for keepers managing the high-humidity requirements of this species. Handheld pressure sprayers with adjustable nozzles allow targeted misting of specific enclosure zones, and the fine mist they produce coats foliage and branches with water droplets that the snake can drink from directly.
