Replicating even a fraction of this physical and cognitive engagement in captivity requires deliberate enrichment planning that goes well beyond placing a wheel in the enclosure and hoping for the best.

The consequences of insufficient enrichment in captive Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs manifest in both behavioral and physical domains. Understimulated animals develop stereotypic behaviors such as repetitive fence-running along enclosure walls, excessive self-anointing with non-food substances, and prolonged periods of inactivity during hours when they should be actively exploring. Physically, the lack of exercise contributes to obesity, which is a leading driver of hepatic lipidosis and cardiovascular disease in captive hedgehogs of all species. The psychological comfort a hedgehog derives from tunnel use is visible in its behavior: animals that are hesitant and defensive in open spaces often relax visibly once inside a tunnel, lowering their quills and moving at an exploratory rather than escape-oriented pace.

Commercially available fabric tunnels marketed for ferrets or guinea pigs are the most popular option and come in a variety of lengths, diameters, and configurations including straight runs, Y-junctions, and spiral designs. The internal diameter should be at least four inches to accommodate the hedgehog's body with quills partially raised, and the fabric should be a sturdy material that resists snagging on quill tips. Fleece-lined tunnels are comfortable but require weekly washing to manage odor, while nylon-shell tunnels are more durable and easier to wipe clean but may feel less inviting to the hedgehog due to their slick interior texture.

PVC pipe in three- to four-inch diameter provides a durable, easy-to-clean tunnel that can be cut to any desired length and connected with elbow fittings to create L-shaped or U-shaped routes. The smooth interior of PVC is easy to sanitize but can be slippery, so some keepers roughen the interior surface lightly with sandpaper or line it with a strip of non-slip shelf liner. Enclosure layout should treat tunnels as connective infrastructure rather than isolated toys. Positioning a tunnel between the sleeping hide and the food station, or between the wheel area and a dig box, creates a purposeful route that the hedgehog will traverse repeatedly throughout the night. Rearranging tunnel positions and configurations every few days introduces spatial novelty that keeps the hedgehog engaged in active exploration rather than following a memorized, habituated path. Sensory Enrichment

Scent enrichment is the simplest form of sensory stimulation to implement and consistently produces dramatic behavioral responses. A dab of dried herb, a small piece of untreated leather, a pinch of coconut fiber, or a drop of dilute vanilla extract placed on a smooth stone or piece of untreated wood will trigger an extended investigation sequence that includes sniffing, licking, and often self-anointing, a hedgehog-specific behavior in which the animal produces frothy saliva and spreads it across its quills after encountering a novel or stimulating scent. Self-anointing is a normal behavior and should not be discouraged, as it appears to serve both sensory-mapping and possible anti-parasitic functions.

Texture variety within the enclosure adds another layer of sensory complexity. Incorporating small areas of different substrate textures such as a patch of smooth river stones, a section of cork bark, a square of sisal matting, or a shallow tray of clean dry sand gives the hedgehog a range of tactile experiences underfoot as it moves through its territory. Each surface texture encourages slightly different gait patterns and engages different proprioceptive feedback pathways, contributing to overall foot health and physical coordination in ways that a uniform substrate cannot.

Novel object introduction is the broadest and most flexible category of sensory enrichment. Almost any hedgehog-safe item that differs from what is already in the enclosure qualifies as a novel object: a new hide shape, a crinkle paper ball, a small wooden block with a different grain and scent from the existing furnishings, or a piece of washed burlap. The key principle is that the item must be safe if mouthed, free of small ingestible parts, and different enough from existing enclosure contents to provoke investigative behavior. Items should be introduced one at a time to avoid overwhelming the hedgehog and should be removed and stored for later rotation once the hedgehog stops interacting with them, typically after several days of decreasing engagement.

Toys to Avoid

Wire exercise wheels and wire running balls are categorically unsafe for Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs and should never be purchased regardless of how they are marketed. Wire-rung wheels trap hedgehog toes and feet between the rungs during high-speed running, causing injuries ranging from minor sprains to compound fractures and degloving injuries that are extremely painful and difficult to treat. Wire mesh exercise balls, sometimes marketed as hamster balls, enclose the hedgehog in a confined sphere that provides no ventilation, causes extreme stress, and creates identical foot-entrapment hazards to wire wheels. Neither product has any legitimate application in hedgehog care.

Small plastic balls, marbles, beads, and any toy with components smaller than the hedgehog's head present a serious ingestion risk. Hedgehogs investigate objects primarily with their mouths, and small items that can be partially or fully swallowed may cause esophageal or intestinal obstruction, which is a veterinary emergency requiring surgical intervention. This includes rubber cat toy balls with bells inside, which can be chewed apart, and jingle bell balls, where the bell itself is a swallowing hazard if the outer shell cracks or separates.

Cotton wool, cotton rope toys, and products containing loose fibrous materials are dangerous because individual fibers can wrap tightly around hedgehog toes, feet, and legs as the animal walks through or pushes against the material. These fiber constrictions, known as hair ring injuries by analogy to the similar problem caused by shed hair in male hedgehogs, cut off blood circulation to the affected digit or limb and progress to necrosis within hours if not discovered and removed. The fine, strong fibers of cotton products are particularly hazardous because they are nearly invisible against the hedgehog's skin and tighten progressively with movement.

Any toy or enrichment item that relies on adhesive, paint, varnish, or chemical treatments to achieve its final form should be treated with suspicion unless the manufacturer specifically certifies the product as safe for small animals that mouth their toys. Many craft-store wooden items marketed as unfinished or natural are treated with preservatives or fumigants during manufacturing and shipping that are not disclosed on the label. Dyed fabric toys may release colorfast chemicals when wet, which is relevant because hedgehogs frequently salivate on objects during self-anointing behavior. When in doubt about a material's safety, the safest course is to select a different product rather than risk exposing the hedgehog to unknown chemicals.

Exercise saucers, sometimes promoted as a safer alternative to traditional wheels, warrant careful evaluation before purchase. While the open, flat running surface eliminates the back-arching concern associated with undersized wheels, many saucer designs slope steeply enough that prolonged running at high speed causes asymmetric strain on the hedgehog's legs and spine, with the outside legs working harder than the inside legs due to the running angle. If a saucer is used, it should be a model with a very gentle incline and a diameter large enough that the running surface approximates a flat plane at the hedgehog's preferred running position.
