This high activity level demands an enclosure with generous floor space rather than vertical height. The minimum recommended footprint for a single adult is four square feet, equivalent to a two-foot by two-foot space, though experienced keepers strongly advocate for six square feet or more to allow meaningful movement, exploration, and separation between sleeping, feeding, and toileting areas.

Unlike arboreal or semi-arboreal small mammals, Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs do not benefit from multi-level enclosures with ramps and platforms. Their short limbs and relatively heavy body make them poor climbers, and falls from even modest heights risk spinal injuries that can be catastrophic for an animal with a rigid quill-covered dorsal surface. Any elevation within the enclosure should be limited to very low platforms no more than a few inches above the substrate, with gentle ramp angles and solid rather than mesh surfaces to prevent foot injuries.

Enclosure walls must be smooth and tall enough to prevent escape, a minimum of twelve to fourteen inches above the substrate surface. Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs are surprisingly capable of scaling textured surfaces such as wire mesh or rough-sided wooden panels, and they will exploit any climbable surface persistently once they discover it. This species is also a competent digger, so enclosures with open bottoms placed directly on carpet or soft flooring are unsuitable unless a solid base panel is added to prevent burrowing out.

Ventilation is a critical but frequently overlooked aspect of enclosure design for this arid-adapted species. Glass terrariums and plastic storage bins, the two most popular enclosure types, both tend to trap moisture and ammonia from urine if not ventilated adequately. Enclosure Types

Glass terrariums designed for reptiles are one of the most popular housing options for Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs, and for good reason. They provide excellent visibility for observation, retain heat effectively when paired with appropriate heating elements, and are easy to clean and disinfect. A forty-gallon breeder-style terrarium offers roughly four and a half square feet of floor space, meeting the minimum footprint requirement for a single hedgehog. Front-opening terrariums are preferable to top-opening models because they allow the keeper to approach the hedgehog at ground level rather than reaching in from above, which reduces startle responses and facilitates calmer handling interactions.

Modified plastic storage bins represent the most budget-friendly enclosure option and are widely used by breeders and experienced keepers who prioritize function over aesthetics. A clear or translucent bin with a minimum capacity of one hundred ten quarts provides adequate floor space for a single animal. The lid must be extensively modified with large ventilation panels covered in hardware cloth or aluminum mesh to provide sufficient airflow, as unmodified bins create dangerously stagnant, humid microclimates that promote respiratory infections and skin conditions. The smooth, low-friction walls of plastic bins have the advantage of being escape-proof without additional height modifications.

Purpose-built small animal enclosures marketed for guinea pigs or rabbits can work for Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs if they meet the floor space requirements and do not have wire flooring. Wire-bottom cages are completely unsuitable for hedgehogs, as their small feet slip through the gaps, leading to a painful and dangerous condition called bumblefoot, in which chronic pressure sores on the foot pads become infected and ulcerated. Any cage with wire flooring must have a solid liner covering the entire floor surface before it can be considered safe for hedgehog use.

Custom-built wooden vivariums are occasionally used by keepers who want a permanent, furniture-grade housing solution. These enclosures can be designed to exact specifications and integrated into a room's existing decor, but they present unique maintenance challenges. All interior wood surfaces must be sealed with a non-toxic, waterproof coating such as marine-grade polyurethane to prevent urine absorption, bacterial growth, and persistent odor development. Unsealed wood becomes permanently contaminated within weeks and cannot be adequately sanitized regardless of cleaning effort.

Substrate & Bedding

Substrate selection for Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs must account for the species' semi-arid origins, its ground-dwelling lifestyle, and its tendency to forage with its face close to or pressed into the substrate surface. Paper-based bedding products made from recycled, unbleached paper pulp are another excellent option, offering superior absorbency and very low dust levels compared to wood shavings. These products come in various formats including shredded paper strips, compressed paper pellets, and crumbled paper fiber, each with slightly different performance characteristics. Shredded paper strips are the most commonly used format because they allow natural burrowing and nesting behavior, but they tend to scatter outside the enclosure more readily than pellets. Paper pellets are denser and more absorbent per unit volume but do not provide the same nesting opportunities and can be uncomfortable for walking if the pellets are large and hard.

Fleece liners have gained popularity among hedgehog keepers as a reusable, zero-waste substrate alternative. Cut from anti-pill polyester fleece and placed over an absorbent layer such as a puppy pad or folded towel, these liners provide a soft, flat surface that is easy to spot-clean daily and machine-wash weekly. The primary concern with fleece liners for Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs specifically is that this species has stronger digging instincts than the African Pygmy Hedgehog, and many individuals will persistently burrow under fleece liners, bunching them up and defeating the purpose of a flat substrate. Sand substrates deserve specific mention because they are sometimes recommended based on the species' desert origins. While a small area of clean, fine-grain play sand can serve as a designated digging zone or dust-bathing area within a larger enclosure, sand is unsuitable as the sole substrate. It does not absorb moisture or odor effectively, compacts into hard layers that harbor bacteria, and individual grains can become lodged in the hedgehog's genital sheath or vulvar folds, causing irritation and infection. Any sand area within the enclosure should be spot-cleaned daily and fully replaced weekly.

Temperature & Climate Control

Temperature management is arguably the single most critical aspect of Long-Eared Desert Hedgehog housing, directly influencing metabolic rate, immune function, appetite, and the risk of torpor entry. The species naturally inhabits regions where daytime temperatures frequently exceed thirty-five degrees Celsius but nighttime temperatures can drop sharply, sometimes to near freezing in winter. In captivity, the goal is to maintain a stable ambient temperature gradient within the enclosure that allows the hedgehog to thermoregulate by moving between warmer and cooler zones.

The recommended ambient temperature range for this species is twenty-four to twenty-nine degrees Celsius, equivalent to roughly seventy-five to eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures below twenty degrees Celsius trigger torpor attempts in Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs, a state of dramatically reduced metabolic activity that is dangerous in captivity because the animal lacks the fat reserves and environmental conditions to sustain it safely. A hedgehog that enters torpor in captivity will become cold, unresponsive, and curled tightly into a ball, and if the condition persists, organ damage and death can follow within hours to days depending on the depth and duration of the torpor event.

Ceramic heat emitters are the preferred heating element for hedgehog enclosures because they produce radiant heat without visible light, preserving the natural photoperiod and avoiding disruption to the animal's nocturnal activity cycle. A ceramic heat emitter mounted in a dome reflector above a mesh-topped enclosure creates a warm basking zone on one side while allowing the opposite end to remain several degrees cooler, establishing the thermal gradient the hedgehog needs to self-regulate. Under-tank heating pads designed for reptile use can supplement the ceramic emitter by providing gentle belly warmth from below, but they should never be the sole heat source because they heat only the substrate surface rather than the ambient air.

Every heating element must be connected to a thermostat, ideally a proportional or pulse-proportional thermostat rather than a simple on-off model, to prevent temperature spikes that can overheat or burn the animal. Hides & Shelter

Long-Eared Desert Hedgehogs are obligate shelter users that spend the majority of their inactive hours concealed within a hide, burrow, or nest structure. In the wild, they utilize abandoned rodent burrows, rock crevices, and spaces beneath dense scrub vegetation as daytime retreats, and captive animals denied access to suitable hides exhibit chronic stress behaviors including excessive self-anointing, reduced appetite, and heightened defensive posturing during handling. Providing multiple hide options within the enclosure is not optional but a baseline welfare requirement for this species.

The primary sleeping hide should be fully enclosed with a single entry point just large enough for the hedgehog to pass through comfortably. Ceramic or hard plastic igloos sold for guinea pigs and rabbits work well and have the advantage of being easy to sanitize, chew-resistant, and heavy enough to stay in place during the hedgehog's nocturnal activity period. The interior should be large enough for the hedgehog to turn around fully and curl into its sleeping position without being compressed against the walls, but not so large that it fails to provide the snug, secure feeling that hedgehogs seek in their sleeping quarters.

A secondary hide or sheltering option placed in a different temperature zone from the primary sleeping hide gives the hedgehog the ability to thermoregulate without sacrificing security. This can be as simple as a half-log shelter, a section of wide-diameter PVC pipe, or a fabric snuggle sack anchored to the enclosure floor to prevent the hedgehog from dragging it into its water bowl. Some keepers provide fleece pouches or bonding bags that serve double duty as hides within the enclosure and handling aids during socialization sessions, though these require frequent washing to prevent odor buildup and bacterial colonization.

Nesting material is equally important and complements the structural hides by allowing the hedgehog to modify its sleeping environment to its own preference. Strips of unbleached paper towel, shredded unprinted paper, or small bundles of chemical-free hay placed near the hide entrance will typically be gathered and arranged by the hedgehog into a nest over the course of several nights. Fabric nesting materials such as fleece strips can be used but must be checked regularly for loose threads and fraying edges, which can wrap around toes and limbs and cause constriction injuries that progress to tissue necrosis if not discovered promptly.

The placement of hides within the enclosure should be thoughtfully planned rather than random. The primary sleeping hide is best positioned in or near the warmest zone of the thermal gradient, since hedgehogs naturally seek warmth during sleep. A secondary hide at the cooler end provides an option for nights when the enclosure runs warmer than usual or when the hedgehog simply prefers a cooler resting spot. Placing hides far from the food and water stations encourages locomotion and mimics the natural pattern of emerging from a burrow and traveling some distance to forage.

Cleaning & Maintenance

A consistent cleaning schedule is essential for preventing the buildup of ammonia, bacteria, and parasites within the Long-Eared Desert Hedgehog's enclosure. Unlike some rodent species that designate specific latrine areas, hedgehogs defecate freely during their active period, often while running on their wheel, which distributes waste across the enclosure surface. Daily spot-cleaning is the minimum acceptable maintenance standard, and most keepers find that establishing a brief morning routine of removing visible droppings, soiled substrate patches, and uneaten fresh food keeps odor and hygiene manageable between full substrate changes.

Full substrate replacement should occur at least once per week for loose bedding systems, though enclosures housing particularly active or messy individuals may require twice-weekly changes. During a full substrate change, all furnishings including hides, wheels, bowls, and enrichment items should be removed and wiped down with a pet-safe disinfectant or a dilute white vinegar solution, rinsed thoroughly, and allowed to dry before being returned to the enclosure. The enclosure floor and walls should be similarly wiped and dried. Bleach solutions are effective disinfectants when diluted to a ratio of one part household bleach to thirty-two parts water, but must be rinsed completely and allowed to off-gas before the hedgehog is returned, as residual chlorine fumes can damage the sensitive respiratory tissue of small mammals.

Water bottles or bowls require daily attention. Water bowls should be emptied, scrubbed, rinsed, and refilled with fresh water every day without exception, as standing water in a warm enclosure rapidly becomes a medium for bacterial growth. Water bottles with sipper tubes are slightly more hygienic but still need daily refilling and should be fully disassembled and cleaned with a bottle brush at least twice per week to prevent biofilm formation inside the tube and ball valve mechanism. Regardless of the water delivery method, keepers should verify daily that the hedgehog has access to clean water and that the delivery device is functioning correctly.

Deep cleaning on a monthly or bimonthly basis provides an opportunity to inspect the enclosure for wear, damage, and developing problems that daily maintenance might miss. Check silicone seals on glass terrariums for separation or mold growth, examine plastic bin walls for stress cracks or chew marks, test heating element connections and thermostat calibration, and inspect the wheel for bearing wear or surface degradation. Addressing minor issues during scheduled deep cleans prevents them from escalating into enclosure failures or safety hazards that could injure the hedgehog or allow escape.
