As a desert-adapted animal that enters torpor in response to cold, the Long-Eared Desert Hedgehog is acutely sensitive to temperature drops that would be inconsequential for a tropical species. Beyond temperature, tracking the hedgehog's weight, activity level, and food consumption over time builds a health baseline that makes it possible to detect subtle changes weeks or months before they produce visible symptoms. A hedgehog that gradually loses five grams per week may not look different to the naked eye for two months, but a digital scale and a simple spreadsheet will flag the trend within the first few weeks. Similarly, a hedgehog that runs four miles per night on its wheel and then drops to one mile over the course of a week is communicating something important about its physical condition, and only a tracking system can capture that data.
The technology selected should be reliable, low-maintenance, and non-disruptive to the hedgehog's environment. Devices that emit audible beeps, produce bright indicator lights, or generate electromagnetic interference near the enclosure can alter the hedgehog's behavior in ways that confound the very data the keeper is trying to collect.
