Digital thermometer-hygrometer combos are the most practical choice for hedgehog enclosures. These units display both temperature and relative humidity on a single screen, with the sensor probe placed inside the enclosure at substrate level while the display sits outside for easy reading. Humidity is a secondary but relevant parameter — extremely dry air below 30 percent relative humidity can exacerbate the dry, flaky skin that hedgehogs are prone to, while persistently damp conditions above 60 percent encourage mold and bacterial growth in bedding.

Wireless temperature monitors that log data and send alerts to a smartphone represent the next tier of monitoring sophistication. These devices track temperature over time, allowing the keeper to identify patterns — overnight drops when the household thermostat cycles down, temperature spikes during afternoon sun exposure, or gradual cooling as a ceramic heat emitter ages and loses output. Alert thresholds can be set so the keeper receives a notification if the enclosure temperature drops below a safe floor, providing an early warning system that can prevent a torpor episode even if the keeper is asleep or away from home.

Placement of the temperature probe matters. The scale should measure in grams for sufficient resolution. Dedicated wheel counter devices attach to the exercise wheel and use a magnetic sensor to count rotations. Combined with the wheel's circumference, the counter calculates total distance per night. The digital variants are more useful for long-term health tracking because they store history rather than requiring the keeper to record a number each morning.

DIY activity tracking is achievable for keepers with basic electronics skills. A small magnetic reed switch attached to the wheel frame, paired with a microcontroller or a simple cycle computer repurposed from a bicycle, provides rotation data at minimal cost.
