African Pygmy Hedgehogs are classified as insectivore-omnivores, which means their digestive systems evolved to process a diet heavy in chitin-rich insects supplemented by small amounts of plant matter and occasional animal protein. In captivity, replicating this balance is the single most important factor in long-term health. A hedgehog that receives too much fat will rapidly become obese — a condition that shortens lifespan and leads to fatty liver disease — while one that receives too little protein may develop muscle wasting and immune deficiency.
The baseline macronutrient targets for an adult African Pygmy Hedgehog are roughly 28–35 percent protein, 10–15 percent fat, and at least 3–5 percent fiber. These numbers shift depending on life stage: juveniles under six months benefit from slightly higher fat content to support rapid growth, while seniors and sedentary adults should stay at the lower end of the fat range. Pregnant or nursing females also have elevated caloric and protein demands.
Beyond macros, micronutrient balance matters more than many keepers realize. Calcium-to-phosphorus ratio should hover near 1.5:1, and hedgehogs are prone to deficiency if their diet relies too heavily on mealworms, which are high in phosphorus and low in calcium. Vitamins A and E play key roles in skin integrity and immune response, and a monotonous diet of a single kibble rarely covers every gap. Variety, offered responsibly, is the surest path to nutritional completeness.
