Space Requirements

African Pygmy Hedgehogs are far more active than their small size suggests, covering significant ground during their nocturnal foraging periods. In the wild, a single hedgehog may travel over a mile in a single night. In captivity, this drive does not disappear — it simply concentrates into whatever space is available. The absolute minimum enclosure footprint for one hedgehog is four square feet, but six to eight square feet is strongly recommended. Hedgehogs housed in cramped enclosures consistently show higher rates of stereotypic behavior, obesity, and stress-related health problems.

Floor space matters far more than vertical height for this species. Hedgehogs are ground-dwellers and poor climbers. An enclosure that prioritizes height over floor area — such as a tall multi-level cage designed for ferrets or rats — offers little usable space and introduces fall hazards. A wide, shallow enclosure with smooth walls and a solid floor is the ideal configuration.

Placement within the home is equally important. The enclosure should sit in a quiet room away from direct sunlight, drafts, and high-traffic noise. Hedgehogs are sensitive to vibration and sudden sound, and an enclosure placed next to a television, washing machine, or frequently slammed door will produce a chronically stressed animal. A spare bedroom or home office typically offers the right balance of climate control and low disturbance.

Keepers who provide larger-than-minimum enclosures almost universally report more active, more handleable hedgehogs. The investment in space pays dividends in the animal's physical health, behavioral richness, and willingness to interact during handling sessions.

Enclosure Types

The three most common enclosure styles for African Pygmy Hedgehogs are modified storage bins, commercially produced small-animal cages, and custom-built vivarium-style enclosures. Each has trade-offs in ventilation, visibility, ease of cleaning, and cost.

Large plastic storage bins — typically in the 105- to 200-quart range — are the most popular choice among experienced keepers. They are inexpensive, easy to clean, and their smooth walls prevent climbing escapes. Ventilation must be added by cutting panels from the lid and replacing them with hardware cloth or mesh, secured with bolts or zip ties rather than adhesive. The primary drawback is limited visibility, which can make it harder to observe the hedgehog without removing the lid.

Commercial small-animal cages with wire tops and plastic bases work well provided the bar spacing is narrow enough to prevent escape — half-inch spacing or less is essential. Wire walls offer superior ventilation and allow the hedgehog to be seen easily, but they also allow bedding to be kicked out and can pose a foot-snag risk if the hedgehog attempts to climb. Cages marketed for guinea pigs are often a suitable size, while hamster and gerbil cages are almost always too small.

Custom vivarium builds using melamine, PVC panels, or modified bookshelf units offer the most control over dimensions and aesthetics. These are popular among keepers who want a large, furniture-grade enclosure that blends into a living space. Ventilation must be engineered into the design, and all edges should be sealed to prevent moisture damage from urine and spilled water.

Bedding & Substrate

Substrate choice directly affects respiratory health, hygiene, and comfort. The two most widely recommended substrates for African Pygmy Hedgehogs are kiln-dried pine shavings and recycled paper-based bedding. Both are absorbent, relatively dust-free when sourced from reputable manufacturers, and easy to spot-clean.

Kiln-dried pine is a reliable option that controls odor effectively and is available at reasonable cost in bulk. The kiln-drying process removes the aromatic phenols that make raw softwood shavings dangerous to small mammals. Cedar shavings, by contrast, are never appropriate — the volatile oils cause respiratory irritation and liver damage. Any pine product used should explicitly state that it has been kiln-dried.

Recycled paper bedding is the gentlest substrate option, producing minimal dust and no aromatic compounds. It is particularly well suited for hedgehogs with sensitive respiratory systems or skin conditions. The trade-off is reduced odor control compared to pine and a higher per-bag cost, though many keepers find the difference manageable.

Fleece liners have gained popularity as a reusable alternative to loose substrates. They eliminate dust entirely and give the enclosure a clean, tidy appearance. However, fleece requires a wicking layer underneath to draw moisture away from the surface, and liners must be changed and laundered frequently — every two to three days — to prevent ammonia buildup. Hedgehogs that dig or burrow may find fleece less enriching than a loose substrate, so some keepers offer a digging box filled with paper bedding alongside a fleece-lined main floor.

Hides & Sleeping Areas

A secure, enclosed hide is non-negotiable for hedgehog housing. These are prey animals with a hardwired instinct to seek enclosed, dark spaces during daylight hours. A hedgehog without an adequate hide will exhibit chronic stress, disrupted sleep patterns, and defensive behavior during handling. At minimum, one hide should be provided, though two — one on the warm side and one on the cooler side of the enclosure — gives the hedgehog thermoregulatory choice.

Commercial small-animal igloos, fleece snuggle sacks, and PVC pipe segments all serve as effective hides. The ideal hide is just large enough for the hedgehog to enter, turn around, and curl up without excess space. Oversized hides feel less secure to the animal. Fabric-based options like snuggle sacks are popular because hedgehogs enjoy burrowing into soft material, but they require frequent washing to stay hygienic.

Some keepers offer nesting material — strips of fleece, unscented paper towels, or dried leaves — that the hedgehog can arrange inside its hide. Hedgehogs are surprisingly deliberate about nest construction, and providing material engages a natural behavior that contributes to psychological wellbeing. Avoid cotton batting, loose threads, or any material that could wrap around limbs or be ingested in dangerous quantities.

The hide should be positioned away from the food and water dishes and away from the exercise wheel. Hedgehogs defecate heavily while running, and a hide placed too close to the wheel will be soiled quickly, forcing more frequent cleaning and potentially discouraging the hedgehog from using it.

Temperature & Climate Control

Temperature management is arguably the most critical aspect of hedgehog housing. African Pygmy Hedgehogs require an ambient enclosure temperature between 73°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C). Temperatures below 72°F can trigger a torpor response — a hibernation-like state that is life-threatening for this domesticated species. Torpor causes metabolic shutdown, immune suppression, and organ damage, and it can kill a hedgehog within days if not reversed.

Ceramic heat emitters mounted above the enclosure are the most widely recommended heating solution. They produce radiant heat without light, which is important because hedgehogs are nocturnal and their light cycle should not be disrupted by a heat source. The emitter should be connected to a thermostat — not simply plugged into the wall — to maintain a stable temperature range and prevent overheating. A quality thermostat with a probe placed at the enclosure floor level is essential safety equipment, not an optional accessory.

Under-tank heating pads designed for reptiles can supplement warmth but should never be the sole heat source. They create localized hot spots rather than ambient warmth, and a hedgehog resting directly on an unregulated pad can sustain thermal burns. If a heat pad is used, it should be placed under one section of the enclosure — never the entire floor — and controlled by a thermostat.

A reliable room thermometer or digital temperature gauge placed inside the enclosure gives the keeper real-time visibility into conditions. Seasonal temperature swings — particularly during autumn and early spring when household heating cycles on and off unpredictably — are the most common cause of accidental torpor attempts. Keepers in colder climates should have a backup heating plan, such as a secondary emitter or an emergency space heater, in case of equipment failure.

Cleaning & Maintenance

A consistent cleaning routine prevents ammonia buildup, bacterial growth, and odor problems that compromise both hedgehog health and household comfort. Hedgehogs are not inherently smelly animals, but they produce a significant volume of feces — especially on and around their exercise wheel — and urine concentrates quickly in an enclosed space.

Daily maintenance should include removing soiled substrate from high-traffic areas, wiping down the exercise wheel, refreshing water, and removing any uneaten fresh food. The wheel is the single dirtiest item in the enclosure because hedgehogs defecate while running, and a neglected wheel becomes a bacterial reservoir within 24 hours. Many keepers find it easiest to keep two wheels and rotate them, cleaning the soiled one in a utility sink.

A full substrate change and enclosure wipe-down should occur weekly. This involves removing all bedding, washing the enclosure floor and walls with a pet-safe disinfectant or a diluted white vinegar solution, rinsing thoroughly, drying completely, and adding fresh substrate. All accessories — hides, dishes, toys — should be washed during this weekly cycle as well.

Fleece liner users follow a modified schedule: liners are swapped every two to three days, with the soiled set laundered in fragrance-free detergent on a hot cycle. The enclosure itself still needs a weekly disinfection wipe-down. Regardless of substrate type, strong chemical cleaners, scented detergents, and bleach should be avoided unless followed by an extremely thorough rinse — residual fumes or chemical traces can irritate a hedgehog's sensitive respiratory system.
