Each accessory must be evaluated not only for its intended function but also for its safety profile when used by an animal that weighs barely an ounce, moves with startling speed, and investigates everything with its teeth.

The essential accessories for African Dormouse keeping fall into several functional categories: feeding and watering equipment that delivers food and water reliably without contamination, nesting and hiding structures that satisfy the dormouse's need for secure sleeping spaces, travel and transport containers for veterinary visits and cage-cleaning relocations, and grooming and hygiene products that support coat and skin health. If a bottle system is not practical for a particular enclosure configuration, a very small, heavy ceramic dish placed on an elevated platform away from the primary activity zone is the least problematic open-water option, but it requires multiple daily water changes.

Food dishes should be shallow, stable, and easy to clean. Small ceramic crocks roughly two to three inches in diameter are ideal for dry food, as their weight prevents tipping and their glazed surface resists absorption of food oils and odors. The entry hole should be large enough for easy access but small enough to create a sense of enclosure. Coconut shell hides offer a natural alternative to wooden boxes and are particularly well-suited to mounting at elevation on branches or cage walls. Half-shell coconut hides with a drilled entry hole provide a semi-enclosed sleeping space, while whole coconut shells with a single access hole create a fully enclosed sphere that many dormice find especially appealing. Coconut shells are naturally resistant to moisture and mold, easy to clean, and inexpensive to replace when they become excessively soiled or worn.

In addition to enclosed nest boxes, partially open hiding accessories such as tunnel sections, bark slabs propped against the enclosure wall, and ceramic hides marketed for reptiles provide secondary retreat options that dormice can use when they want cover without full enclosure. Discovering that no suitable carrier is available at the moment it is urgently needed is a stressful and preventable situation.

Small hard-sided carriers designed for hamsters or mice work well for dormouse transport, provided they meet the same bar-spacing and closure-security standards required for the primary enclosure. Maximum bar spacing of one-quarter inch applies to carriers just as it does to cages. Ventilation openings, door latches, and any seams between carrier components should be inspected for gaps that a determined dormouse could exploit. For short-distance transport such as moving dormice to a holding container during cage cleaning, a deep plastic container with smooth sides and a secure mesh or perforated lid can serve as a temporary holding space. The container should be tall enough that the dormouse cannot jump out when the lid is briefly opened, typically at least twelve inches deep, and it should contain a small hide, a piece of familiar-smelling nesting material, and a few pieces of dry food to reduce stress during the confinement period.

Temperature management during transport is critically important for an animal as small as an African Dormouse. The thermal mass of a thirty-gram animal is essentially negligible, meaning body temperature tracks ambient temperature very quickly. In cold weather, a chemical hand warmer wrapped in a towel and placed adjacent to but not inside the carrier prevents dangerous chilling during the trip. In hot weather, a frozen gel pack wrapped similarly on the opposite side of the carrier provides cooling without direct contact. Under normal circumstances, a healthy dormouse requires minimal grooming intervention from its keeper. Like chinchillas and degus, dormice benefit from access to fine dust that absorbs excess oils from the coat and skin, helping prevent the greasy, matted fur condition that can develop in animals housed in warm, humid environments. Nail maintenance is occasionally necessary, though most dormice wear their nails down naturally through climbing on rough surfaces like cork bark, natural branches, and stone platforms. If nails become overgrown, which is more common in older or less active individuals, careful trimming with small, sharp nail scissors designed for birds or kittens is the appropriate intervention. This procedure typically requires two people, one to gently restrain the dormouse in a soft cloth wrap and one to trim, and only the sharp tips of the nails should be removed to avoid cutting the quick and causing bleeding.

A basic first-aid kit tailored to small exotic mammals is a worthwhile accessory investment. Styptic powder for minor bleeding from nail trims or small cuts, saline solution for flushing eyes or minor wounds, a pair of fine-tipped tweezers for removing debris from fur or paws, and a small supply of unflavored electrolyte solution for rehydrating a stressed or ill animal constitute the core items. A pet-safe enzymatic cleaner or disinfectant is the cornerstone of the cleaning supply kit. Having all cleaning supplies organized and stored together in a caddy or bin near the enclosure removes the friction of searching for supplies and makes the daily routine feel like a two-minute task rather than a chore.

Certain categories of accessories that are commonly sold for small mammals are actively dangerous for African Dormice and should be excluded from any purchasing consideration. Exercise balls, the transparent plastic spheres that allow hamsters to roll around the floor outside their cage, are inappropriate and hazardous for dormice. No commercially available harness is designed for an animal in the twenty-to-thirty-five-gram weight range, and attempting to fit a harness intended for a larger species onto a dormouse risks spinal injury, rib compression, and limb entanglement. Even purpose-built micro-harnesses cannot be made safe for an animal capable of the sudden explosive movements that characterize dormouse escape behavior. The forces involved in a panicked dormouse hitting the end of a leash at full speed can cause catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries.

Cotton or synthetic fabric hammocks and pouches, while popular for sugar gliders and rats, present serious risks for dormice unless carefully constructed from tightly woven material with no loose threads or fraying edges. Dormice will chew fabric accessories, ingesting fibers that can cause gastrointestinal blockage, and loose threads can wrap around limbs or digits with tourniquet-like consequences. If fabric accessories are used at all, they should be made from fleece with heat-sealed edges and inspected before each use for any signs of fraying, holes, or thread pulls. Salt licks and mineral wheels with mounting hardware that positions them at fixed points on the cage wall may seem harmless but carry a subtle risk. Dormice that become habitual mineral lick users can consume excessive sodium, leading to kidney stress and chronic dehydration. Additionally, the metal mounting hardware associated with these products sometimes includes sharp edges, spring clips, or wire components that create entrapment or laceration hazards. If mineral supplementation is desired, a small cuttlebone affixed to a branch or wall with a simple cable tie is a safer delivery method that can be easily removed if overconsumption becomes apparent.
