African Dormice belong to the family Gliridae and are true omnivores, a distinction that sets them apart from many commonly kept small mammals that are primarily herbivorous. In the wild, species within the Graphiurus genus consume a varied diet of insects, fruit, seeds, nectar, and occasionally small vertebrates or eggs. Replicating this dietary diversity in captivity is essential for maintaining proper body condition, reproductive health, and longevity. An imbalanced diet that skews too heavily toward any single food group will eventually produce visible health consequences, from obesity and fatty liver disease to metabolic bone disorder.
Protein requirements for African Dormice are considerably higher than those of hamsters, gerbils, or mice, typically falling in the range of eighteen to twenty-five percent of the total diet by dry weight. Much of this protein should come from animal-based sources such as live or dried insects, which provide amino acid profiles that plant proteins alone cannot match. Fat content should remain moderate, around five to eight percent, since these small animals have rapid metabolisms that burn through calories quickly but are still susceptible to hepatic lipidosis when fat intake is chronically elevated.
Carbohydrates and sugars play a role in the natural diet through fruit and nectar consumption, but captive dormice are far less active than their wild counterparts and therefore require proportionally less sugar to avoid weight gain. Fiber is important for digestive regularity but does not need to dominate the diet the way it does for rabbits or chinchillas. A balanced approach that mirrors the seasonal variation a wild dormouse would encounter produces the best long-term outcomes.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is a critical concern that many new dormouse keepers overlook. Insects, particularly those raised on low-calcium substrates, tend to have poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratios. Without proper gut-loading of feeder insects or supplemental calcium dusting, captive dormice are at significant risk of developing metabolic bone disease, which manifests as weakened bones, dental abnormalities, and in severe cases, spontaneous fractures. A target calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of roughly two to one is recommended by most exotic veterinarians familiar with small insectivorous mammals.
