For the insect component of the diet, sourcing matters enormously. Mealworms are convenient and widely available but are relatively high in fat and have a poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratio when not gut-loaded. Calcium supplementation is arguably the most critical supplement for captive African Dormice. Foods to Avoid

The essential oils present in citrus peels are particularly problematic and can cause contact irritation to the sensitive skin around the mouth and paws. Even small quantities of citrus juice mixed into other foods can trigger loose stools and reduced appetite in sensitive individuals.

All members of the allium family are toxic to African Dormice and must never be offered under any circumstances. Onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots contain organosulfur compounds that damage red blood cells and can cause hemolytic anemia, which is rapidly fatal in an animal weighing barely thirty grams. This prohibition extends to cooked forms of these foods, as the toxic compounds are not fully neutralized by heat. Any prepared human food that might contain garlic or onion powder, including most seasoned meats and sauces, is therefore also off-limits.

Chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are straightforwardly toxic and should never be accessible to dormice even accidentally. Theobromine in chocolate and caffeine in coffee or tea affect the cardiovascular and nervous systems, and the tiny body mass of a dormouse means even trace amounts can produce dangerous effects. Enclosures should be positioned away from kitchen areas where food spills or crumbs could introduce these substances into the habitat.

Processed foods designed for human consumption are universally inappropriate regardless of how bland or natural they may seem. Bread, crackers, pasta, rice cakes, breakfast cereals, and similar starchy products offer nothing but empty carbohydrates and often contain salt levels that are harmful to small mammals. Raw dried beans and legumes contain lectins and enzyme inhibitors that are toxic before cooking, and even cooked beans provide a nutrient profile poorly suited to dormouse physiology. When evaluating any potential food item, the guiding principle should be whether a wild Graphiurus would encounter something similar in its natural sub-Saharan habitat. If the answer is clearly no, the food does not belong in the enclosure.

Feeding Schedule

African Dormice are nocturnal animals that become active after dark and do most of their foraging, socializing, and exercising during the nighttime hours. The primary feeding should therefore occur in the early evening, timed to coincide with the onset of the dormouse's active period. Offering food just before or at dusk ensures that fresh items are available when the animal is most motivated to eat, and it allows the keeper to observe initial feeding behavior as a daily health check.

The dry food base, whether a measured portion of insectivore pellets or a pellet-and-seed blend, should be placed in a stable, shallow dish each evening.
