UVB lighting is the single most critical accessory in veiled chameleon husbandry, directly governing the animal's ability to synthesize vitamin D3 and metabolize dietary calcium. Without adequate UVB exposure, metabolic bone disease is inevitable regardless of how well the rest of the husbandry program is executed. The two primary UVB bulb formats used in chameleon keeping are linear fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs, with linear tubes being strongly preferred because they distribute UVB radiation across a broader area of the enclosure, creating a larger effective exposure zone that the chameleon can access during its natural movement patterns throughout the day.
Linear T5 high-output fluorescent tubes have become the standard recommendation for veiled chameleons due to their superior UVB output, longer effective lifespan, and more consistent spectral distribution compared to older T8 format tubes. A T5 HO bulb rated at 6 percent UVB output is appropriate for screen-topped enclosures where the bulb sits on top of the mesh, as the screen filters a significant portion of the UVB radiation before it reaches the animal. For enclosures where the bulb can be mounted inside the cage, a 6 percent T5 HO bulb should be positioned so that the closest perching branch is no nearer than 8 to 10 inches from the bulb surface, preventing the possibility of photokeratoconjunctivitis, a painful eye condition caused by excessive UVB exposure at close range.
The fixture housing the UVB bulb should include a reflector that directs the maximum amount of UVB radiation downward into the enclosure rather than allowing it to scatter in all directions. Fixtures without reflectors waste a substantial portion of the bulb's output to the ceiling and surrounding walls, effectively reducing the UVB intensity reaching the chameleon by as much as 50 percent. Purpose-built reptile UVB fixtures with integrated aluminum or polished reflectors are available from several manufacturers and represent a meaningful upgrade over generic shop light fixtures, even when using the same bulb.
UVB bulb replacement schedules are a non-negotiable aspect of chameleon lighting management. Even though a UVB bulb may continue to produce visible light for years, its UVB output degrades progressively from the moment it is first ignited. Most T5 HO UVB bulbs should be replaced every 12 months, while T8 bulbs typically require replacement every 6 months. The degradation is invisible to the human eye, making it impossible to assess bulb effectiveness without a UVB meter. Relying on visible light output as an indicator of UVB production is one of the most common and consequential errors in reptile lighting management, as a bulb can appear perfectly functional while delivering clinically insufficient UVB radiation.
