Dysecdysis, commonly known as retained shed or shedding problems, is one of the most frequently encountered health issues in captive leopard geckos. This condition occurs when the normal shedding process fails to complete properly, leaving old skin adhered to the gecko's body. While dysecdysis might initially seem like a minor cosmetic issue, retained shed can lead to serious complications including digit constriction and loss, eye problems, infection, and systemic illness if not addressed promptly. Understanding the shedding process and providing appropriate husbandry to support it is fundamental to leopard gecko care.
Leopard geckos, like all reptiles, shed their skin periodically throughout their lives as they grow and to replace worn integument. Juvenile geckos shed more frequently than adults due to rapid growth, sometimes every one to two weeks, while adults typically shed every four to eight weeks. The shedding process, called ecdysis, normally takes only a few hours and involves the gecko rubbing against surfaces to loosen and remove the old skin, which they usually eat. When environmental conditions are inappropriate or the gecko has underlying health issues, this process can fail, resulting in dysecdysis.
The impact of dysecdysis on leopard gecko health varies significantly depending on where the retained shed occurs and how long it remains. Shed retained on the body may simply appear unsightly, while shed retained on the digits acts like a tourniquet, cutting off blood supply and leading to tissue death and toe loss if not removed promptly. Eye caps, the specialized shed covering the spectacle (the clear scale protecting the eye in some gecko species), can cause vision impairment, corneal damage, and secondary eye infections when retained. Tail tip constriction can result in necrosis and loss of the tail tip.
The excellent news is that dysecdysis is highly preventable through proper husbandry and highly treatable when it does occur. Providing appropriate humidity, particularly through a humid hide, prevents the vast majority of shedding problems. When retained shed is identified early, it can usually be removed safely with proper technique, avoiding complications. Recurring dysecdysis should prompt investigation of husbandry conditions and potential underlying health issues. Working with a reptile-experienced veterinarian is advisable for severe cases or when complications develop.
