Dubia roaches have gained significant popularity among veiled chameleon keepers because of their superior calcium-to-phosphorus ratio compared to crickets. They are quieter, less odorous, and unable to climb smooth surfaces, which makes colony maintenance far simpler. Black soldier fly larvae, sold commercially under several brand names, offer an exceptionally high calcium content in their natural state, often eliminating the need for additional calcium dusting when they constitute a significant portion of the diet. These larvae are especially useful for gravid females that require elevated calcium intake to support egg production without risking hypervitaminosis from excessive supplementation.
Silkworms provide a soft-bodied, high-moisture prey item that many veiled chameleons find highly palatable. Their amino acid profile is notably rich in serines and glycines, and their low fat content makes them suitable for animals prone to obesity, a condition that is more common in captive veiled chameleons than many keepers realize. Hornworms serve a dual purpose as both a hydration source and a feeding stimulus, as their bright coloration and active movement trigger strong feeding responses in chameleons that have become disinterested in more common feeders. However, hornworms grow rapidly and should be offered before they reach excessive size.
Waxworms and superworms occupy the role of occasional treats rather than dietary staples. Waxworms contain a disproportionately high fat content that can contribute to hepatic lipidosis when offered too frequently, while superworms possess a tough chitinous exoskeleton that presents a mild impaction risk if fed in large quantities to smaller individuals. Butterworms, though less widely available, provide a strong feeding response due to their scent and movement patterns and can be useful for enticing picky eaters or recovering animals that need caloric supplementation.
