The goal of enrichment is not to entertain the keeper but to provide the gecko with opportunities to express natural behaviors such as climbing, foraging, investigating novel objects, and choosing between microhabitats.

The framework for Chahoua enrichment rests on five categories: structural, feeding, sensory, social, and cognitive. Structural enrichment involves the physical layout of the enclosure and the complexity of its climbing surfaces. Feeding enrichment transforms mealtime from passive consumption into an active search. Sensory enrichment introduces safe variations in texture, scent, and visual stimuli. Social enrichment, where appropriate, involves carefully managed exposure to conspecifics. The interplay of light and shadow changes subtly as plants grow and as the gecko moves through the space, providing a constantly shifting visual landscape that keeps the environment from feeling flat and featureless.

Rotating and Refreshing

The most well-designed enrichment setup becomes stale if it remains unchanged for months. Chahouas are observant animals that map their environment thoroughly and, once habituated, reduce their exploratory behavior in a static space. Scheduled rotation of enrichment elements maintains the novelty that drives investigation and active movement.

A practical rotation schedule involves changing one element of the enclosure every one to two weeks. This might mean swapping the position of two branches, replacing a piece of cork bark with a different piece, adding a new plant, or moving the food dish to a different location. The change should be subtle enough that the gecko does not feel its entire territory has been disrupted but significant enough that it notices and investigates. A gecko that emerges from its daytime hide and immediately begins tongue-flicking and exploring the changed area is demonstrating the kind of engaged, investigative behavior that enrichment is designed to promote.

Maintaining a small inventory of alternate decor items outside the enclosure makes rotation practical. Keep three or four extra branches, a spare cork bark round, and an additional plant or two on hand so that swapping is as simple as removing one item and replacing it with another. The removed items can be cleaned, dried, and stored until their next turn in the rotation. This approach also extends the lifespan of individual decor pieces by giving them time to dry out and be inspected for mold or structural degradation before being returned to the humid enclosure environment.

Seasonal adjustments add another layer of variety. Slightly modifying the misting schedule, photoperiod, or temperature range to mimic the subtle seasonal shifts of New Caledonia introduces environmental variation on a longer timescale. Chahouas that experience a mild winter cooling period followed by a gradual return to normal temperatures often show increased activity and appetite in the warming phase, behavior that suggests the seasonal signal has genuine physiological and behavioral effects. These adjustments should be gentle and well-researched rather than extreme, as the goal is stimulation, not stress.

Safety Considerations

Every enrichment item introduced into a Chahoua enclosure must pass a basic safety assessment before use. The gecko's welfare is the priority, and even the most stimulating enrichment item is not worth using if it introduces a physical hazard. Sharp edges, pinch points, unstable structures that could collapse onto the animal, and materials that release toxins in warm, humid conditions are all disqualifying risks.

Wood and cork bark sourced from outdoor environments must be sanitized before use. Baking in an oven at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 45 minutes kills parasites, insect larvae, and mold spores without significantly degrading the structural integrity of the material. Boiling works for smaller items. Cork bark should be baked at a lower temperature for a shorter period or treated with a reptile-safe disinfectant and dried thoroughly, as it can scorch and crumble under sustained high heat. Pothos, philodendrons, bromeliads, ficus, dracaena, and sansevieria are all well-established vivarium-safe species. Plants from the lily family, euphorbia family, and any species with milky latex sap should be avoided, as their chemical defenses can irritate the gecko's skin, eyes, or mucous membranes on contact. New plants should be thoroughly rinsed and, ideally, kept outside the enclosure for several weeks to allow any residual nursery pesticides to dissipate before introduction.

Small items that the gecko could accidentally ingest during feeding are a persistent enrichment hazard. Loose gravel, decorative glass beads, small pebbles, and fine-particle substrates like sand or crushed walnut shell can be swallowed along with prey and cause gastrointestinal impaction. Even in bioactive setups where the substrate itself is safe, any small decorative objects placed on or near the substrate surface should be large enough that the gecko cannot fit them into its mouth. When in doubt, size the object against the gecko's head. If it could be swallowed, it does not belong in the enclosure.
